Gujarat Pipavav Port inks ₹17,000 crore MoU with Gujarat Maritime Board in CM’s presence
Gandhinagar, Oct 2025 : Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, the Government of Gujarat has taken an important step toward realising Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Samudra Se Samriddhi’ through the development of modern infrastructure in the port sector.
For this purpose, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth ₹17,000 crore was signed between the Gujarat Maritime Board and Gujarat Pipavav Port Limited (APM Terminals) on Wednesday in Gandhinagar, in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel and Chairman of A.P. Moller-Maersk Board, Mr. Robert Maersk Uggla.
The objective of this MoU is to strengthen Gujarat’s maritime sector through advanced development and capacity expansion of Pipavav Port. While appreciating the MoU, CM stated that the expansion of Pipavav Port will further consolidate Gujarat’s established identity as the ‘Maritime Gateway of India.’ He added that strengthening the ports network in Gujarat will empower industries, exporters, and the logistics sector of the state. It will reduce both the time and cost of exports and imports. Industrial development, warehousing, and supply chain facilities will expand in the surrounding areas of the port, leading to a significant boost in the state’s economic activities.
This project will generate approximately 25,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities in the future. These opportunities will provide new momentum to the local economy and improve the standard of living in rural areas.
Through this MoU, the capacity of Pipavav Port to handle container, bulk, liquid, and Ro-Ro cargo will be enhanced, making operations more efficient and faster. Under this investment, new liquid cargo berths, mechanised bulk handling facilities, modern container terminals, digital operation systems, and eco friendly infrastructure will be developed.
Notably, after this potential expansion, Pipavav Port will establish a new identity in Gujarat’s maritime sector. This expansion project will be important in achieving the target of increasing the capacity of Gujarat’s non-major ports to 3000 MMTPA by 2047, in line with Prime Minister’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Mr. Jon Goldner, Chief Executive of APM Terminals Asia and Middle East, stated that this investment plan is not only for the expansion of Pipavav Port but also for opening new opportunities for Gujarat, India, and global trade. He added that their goal is to make Pipavav a model of world-class efficiency and green growth, ensuring lasting prosperity for the local community and strengthening India’s leadership in maritime trade.
On the occasion of the MoU signing, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Shri M. K. Das, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman of GMB Shri S. S. Rathore, Principal Secretary of Ports and Transport Shri R. C. Meena, Executive Vice Chairman of Gujarat Maritime Board Ms. Remya Mohan, senior officials of the Maritime Board, from Maersk and APM Terminals, Group Chief Representative Officer Rene Pedersen, Managing Director of Gujarat Pipavav Port Girish Aggarwal, and Head of Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs for Maersk in the India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka region Shri Vivek Sharma were present.
