MP Emerging as Energy Capital through Innovation and Investor-Friendly Policies : Minister Shri Shukla
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the guidance of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Madhya Pradesh is emerging as a leading state in clean and green energy. The Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Rakesh Shukla, said that Prime Minister Modi has set an ambitious target of producing 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by the year 2030 and achieving a ‘net zero carbon footprint’ by 2070. Madhya Pradesh is moving ahead with dedication and commitment to realizing this national resolve.
Shri Shukla informed that the state has recorded a 19-fold growth in the new and renewable energy sector during the past 12 years. More than 30 percent of Madhya Pradesh’s total power generation capacity now comes from green energy sources. This remarkable achievement is the result of the state’s energy policy, technological innovations, and investor-friendly approach.
Decisive progress toward energy self-reliance
The state government has given top priority to environmental protection and energy self-sufficiency. Owing to its geographical advantages and abundance of natural resources, Madhya Pradesh ranks among the leading energy-surplus states of India. The state’s policies are realizing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of ‘Clean Energy – Self-Reliant India.’
Unprecedented investment and job creation
During the Global Investors Summit (GIS)–Bhopal, the state’s ‘Technology-Agnostic Renewable Energy Policy’ attracted wide attention from domestic and international investors. This policy has already brought investments worth over Rs. 5.72 lakh crore, creating employment opportunities for more than 1.46 lakh people. Renowned companies such as Avaada Energy, MKC Infrastructure, NSL Renewable Power, Torrent Power, and Jindal India Renewable Energy are making major investments in the state.
During the inauguration of GIS–Bhopal, Prime Minister Modi had remarked that the nation’s energy sector has made remarkable progress over the last decade. Praising Madhya Pradesh’s contribution, he noted that out of the state’s 31,000 megawatts of total power capacity, around 30 percent comes from green energy.
Rewa and Omkareshwar: New hubs of green energy
The Rewa Solar Park has set new benchmarks for clean energy in India. It is one of the largest solar parks in the country and also supplies electricity to the Delhi Metro. Similarly, the country’s largest floating solar power plant (278 megawatts) has been established at Omkareshwar, giving a new direction to clean energy generation through reservoir utilization. Shri Shukla also highlighted that the recently commissioned ‘Solar plus Battery Storage’ project in Morena has set a milestone by providing 24-hour green energy at a rate of just Rs. 2.70 per unit. This project marks India’s first major step toward ‘round-the-clock green power supply’, capable of meeting peak-hour demand comparable to coal-based plants.
Sanchi becomes the state’s first solar city
Taking a historic step toward environmental protection, the state government has declared Sanchi as Madhya Pradesh’s first solar city. The project is based on the ‘Net Zero Carbon’ principle—producing as much green energy as is consumed. This initiative will serve as an inspiring model for the entire nation.
Narmadapuram to become an energy equipment hub
A dedicated manufacturing zone for renewable and power equipment is being developed in Narmadapuram district. This will boost industrial activities in the state and create thousands of new employment opportunities.
Target of 20 gigawatts of green energy by 2030
Currently, five major solar projects are operational in Madhya Pradesh with a total generation capacity of 2.75 gigawatts (2,750 megawatts). The state government has set a goal to achieve 20 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by the year 2030.
Policy reforms and technological innovation
Madhya Pradesh is the first state in India to implement a ‘Technology-Agnostic Renewable Energy Policy,’ offering attractive and favorable opportunities to investors for promoting solar and wind energy. Under the Kusum-C scheme, bids have been received for capacity totaling about 18,000 megawatts, with extensive participation from farmers, MSMEs, and private developers. The scheme includes a provision for 100% feeder solarization to ensure daytime power supply to farmers.
Promotion of pumped hydro and biofuel projects
The state is promoting pumped hydro and biofuel projects. Applications have been received for pumped hydro projects with a total capacity of 14,850 megawatts, of which 8,450 megawatts have already been registered. Similarly, proposed projects for Compressed Biogas (CBG) and biomass pellets have a combined capacity of over 6,500 tonnes per day.
Notable achievements in solar energy
Madhya Pradesh has successfully established solar projects in Rewa, Agar, Shajapur, and Neemuch. The Rewa project was the first in India where the solar tariff fell below Rs. 3 per unit, while the Neemuch project achieved a record low tariff of Rs. 2.15 per unit at the time. Through these projects, the state is also supplying green energy to Indian Railways and other states.
Solarization of government buildings and local employment
The state government has initiated the installation of solar plants on government buildings in all 55 districts under the RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) model. This will not only reduce electricity expenditure for government institutions but also provide technical training and employment opportunities for local youth. In addition, through the Surya Mitra Yojana, partnerships with ITI institutes, and various skill development programs, thousands of youth are being trained for careers in the solar energy sector.
