CM Stalin Lays Foundation for 12 New Working Women’s Hostels and New Buildings for Child Welfare Homes in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Nov 2025 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today laid the foundation stone for 12 new “Thozhi” working women’s hostels across various districts and for new buildings at the Coimbatore “Poongothai” Government Girls’ Home and the Tiruchirappalli Government Observation Home. He also inaugurated a newly constructed Government Children’s Home building at Royapuram, Chennai.

The new initiatives aim to strengthen women’s welfare and child protection infrastructure across the state.

₹62.51 Crore for 12 New Working Women’s Hostels

Under the Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, the government has sanctioned ₹62.51 crore to establish 12 new hostels that will accommodate 740 working women in Thirupathur, Vellore, Mayiladuthurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, The Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Pudukkottai, Ariyalur, Thiruvallur, and Kanyakumari.

These hostels are designed to provide safe and affordable accommodation for women who migrate from their hometowns for employment. Each facility will offer modern amenities such as biometric entry, 24×7 security, Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance, purified drinking water, nutritious meals, recreation areas, laundry services, and parking. Online booking and information will be available through the official portal www.thozhi.in.

At present, 19 hostels are functioning successfully in 15 districts, benefiting 1,824 working women. Additionally, 14 new hostels are under construction at a total cost of ₹176.93 crore, expected to benefit another 2,000 women upon completion. With the latest expansion, Tamil Nadu will soon have 27 new working women’s hostels, accommodating nearly 2,790 women employees across the state.

₹27.90 Crore for Child Welfare Facilities

Chief Minister Stalin also laid the foundation stone for new buildings at the Coimbatore “Poongothai” Government Girls’ Home (₹16.95 crore) and the Tiruchirappalli Government Observation Home (₹10.95 crore). These facilities, under the Department of Social Defence, will offer better living, learning, and rehabilitation environments for children in need of care and protection.

The homes will include classrooms, recreation halls, counseling centers, healthcare facilities, dining halls, and vocational training areas.

₹7 Crore Children’s Home Inaugurated in Royapuram

The Chief Minister inaugurated a newly constructed ₹7 crore building for the Government Children’s Home at Royapuram, Chennai. Built over 14,876 sq. ft., the new facility includes dormitories, classrooms, libraries, skill development rooms, medical units, dining halls, and indoor play areas. The center can house up to 70 children and aims to provide a nurturing and secure environment.

The event was attended by Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Geetha Jeevan, Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena, IAS, Secretary to Government, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department Selvi Murali Rani, IAS, and other senior officials.
