New Delhi, Nov 2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a significant bilateral meeting in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing the India–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The meeting reflected the remarkable progress achieved since the relationship was elevated to this level in 2020.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the deepening and diversification of collaboration across multiple sectors over the past five years. PM Albanese also extended solidarity to India over the recent terror attack, with both leaders reiterating their resolve to strengthen the global fight against terrorism.

The discussions spanned a wide spectrum of bilateral priorities, including political and strategic engagement, defence and security, clean and nuclear energy, trade and investment, critical minerals, technology, mobility, education and stronger people-to-people ties. They also exchanged views on major regional and global developments shaping the Indo-Pacific and broader international order.

Acknowledging the strong momentum generated by frequent high-level exchanges, the leaders agreed that continued dialogue has significantly accelerated progress in bilateral cooperation. They reaffirmed that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has laid a robust foundation for an expanded and more resilient framework of engagement.

Following the meeting, PM Modi shared a detailed note on X, highlighting the extensive scope of cooperation. “Had a very good meeting with PM Albanese of Australia. This year, the strategic partnership between our nations completes 5 years, and these years have witnessed transformative outcomes that have deepened our cooperation. We emphasised three key sectors—defence and security, nuclear energy and trade—where there is immense potential for ties to grow further. We also discussed education, cultural exchanges and more,” he wrote.

A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) echoed this assessment, noting the leaders’ satisfaction with the expanding bilateral agenda and the renewed commitment to advance cooperation in areas vital to the economic and strategic interests of both nations. The MEA also highlighted the Australian Prime Minister’s condemnation of the recent terror attack in India and his assurance of full solidarity.

The meeting underscored the shared Indo-Pacific vision of both nations, centred on a free, open, stable and prosperous region. While specific regional issues were not detailed in the MEA release, the conversation reaffirmed the importance of coordinated efforts in defence cooperation, critical minerals supply chains, emerging technologies and education.

As India and Australia continue to reinforce their strategic convergence, the Johannesburg meeting added further momentum to a partnership that has grown significantly in scale and ambition. Both leaders agreed to work closely to take bilateral ties to “even greater heights” in the years ahead.
