New OTP System for Tatkal Tickets to Ensure Fair Access for Genuine Travellers

New Delhi, 2025 : In a significant move to curb malpractices in Tatkal ticket bookings and provide genuine travellers a fair chance, the Railway Ministry has introduced a one-time password (OTP) verification system for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at physical reservation counters.

Initially rolled out on a pilot basis from November 17 for a select set of trains, the system has now been expanded to cover 52 trains. Government sources have confirmed that the OTP mechanism will be extended to all remaining trains in a phased manner over the coming days.

Under the new system, passengers booking Tatkal tickets at a counter will receive an OTP on the mobile number provided in the reservation form. The ticket will be issued only after successful verification of the OTP, adding an extra layer of security. This step is expected to significantly reduce manipulation in the high-demand Tatkal booking window and ensure that tickets reach genuine travellers rather than touts and agents.

Officials highlighted that linking every counter transaction to a mobile OTP will prevent intermediaries from exploiting the limited Tatkal quota. This is part of the Railway Ministry’s broader effort to modernize and secure the ticketing ecosystem, enhancing transparency and passenger convenience.

This move follows earlier reforms aimed at curbing fraudulent bookings online. In July, Railways introduced Aadhaar-based OTP verification for Tatkal bookings through the IRCTC website and mobile application to deter automated or bulk bookings by bots. From October 1, only users authenticated through Aadhaar could book reserved general tickets during the first 15 minutes of the booking window, further limiting opportunities for misuse.

According to railway officials, these cumulative measures will not only make it harder for unscrupulous elements to corner tickets but also ensure that ordinary travellers have a fairer shot at securing last-minute tickets during peak travel periods.

Passengers can now expect a more transparent and efficient process at reservation counters, aligning physical bookings with the enhanced security features already implemented online. Officials emphasized that these steps reflect the Railways’ commitment to safeguarding passengers’ interests and improving overall access to train travel, especially during the critical Tatkal booking hours.

With the OTP verification system now operational and set to expand across the network, the Railways aim to create a more equitable booking environment, ensuring that last-minute travel needs are met for genuine passengers rather than being diverted to unauthorized intermediaries.
