RD&A Minister Prof. Lalnilawma Inaugurates Regional SARAS Fair, Lunglei 2025

Lunglei, December 2025: The Mizoram State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MzSRLM) under the Rural Development & Administration (RD&A) Department, Government of Mizoram, is organizing the Regional SARAS (Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society) Fair at the Saikuti Hall Ground Floor in Lunglei from December 9–13, 2025. The 12-day event will be inaugurated by RD&A Minister Prof. Lalnilawma.

Minister Prof. Lalnilawma highlighted that since 1999, when the government launched the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) to promote self-help groups (SHGs), and later in 2013, when MzSRLM was established, numerous initiatives have been implemented to support SHGs, including training programs, skill development, and financial assistance. He emphasized that since 2013, the government has made special efforts to promote women entrepreneurs, particularly those engaged in rural livelihoods, and noted the successful establishment of groups like the Ropuiliani Women Farmer Producer Company. Many of these initiatives have strengthened the presence of women-led SHGs across Mizoram.

Prof. Lalnilawma underlined the importance of proper marketing for rural products and said that MzSRLM has ensured that SHGs produce high-quality goods. He stated that all items are made with care and skill, and SHGs are encouraged to maintain consistent quality under the “Sel Hel” brand to build recognition across the state. He added that showcasing innovative and well-crafted products at fairs encourages people to appreciate and support the artisans’ work.

Speaking at the event, Khual Zahawm MLA and Lunglei South representative Pu Lalramliana Papuia expressed his support for the fair, highlighting that MzSRLM and SHGs have successfully empowered women and contributed to rural development. He encouraged active participation to ensure the fair is successful and beneficial for both producers and consumers.

The Regional SARAS Fair is attended by Lunglei Municipal Council Vice Chairman K. Lalrinawma, councillors, government officials, MzSRLM staff, SHG members, political party representatives, volunteers, and students. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Lunglei District, Pi Zoramdini, delivered the welcome address, and MzSRLM CEO Pi Zosangzuali Pachuau presented a report on the organization’s achievements. Chief Operating Officer Dr. Zomuankima formally inaugurated the fair by cutting the ribbon.

According to the MzSRLM report, since its establishment in 2013, the organization has reached 11 districts, 28 RD blocks, and 721 villages. There are 11,257 SHGs with 81,030 members, supported by 759 Village Organizations (VOs) and 84 Cluster Level Federations (CLFs). The SARAS Fair is conducted twice a year in Mizoram, with the first day in Aizawl and the second day in other districts.

At the Lunglei fair, SHGs from 24 RD blocks and 84 groups have set up 41 stalls showcasing a variety of products, including textiles, teak wood crafts (boards, racks, etc.), agricultural produce, bags, handicrafts, snacks, beverages, and other artisanal items. The fair also emphasizes eco-friendly packaging and ensures products meet FSSAI standards. Transactions can be conducted via cash or QR code payments.

The Regional SARAS Fair provides an opportunity for SHGs to exhibit their innovative products, expand market reach, and gain recognition for their hard work. Both the RD&A Department and MzSRLM aim to empower communities and enhance the livelihoods of rural artisans through such events.
