Kedarnath Sees No Snowfall for First Time, Cold Intensifies

New Delhi, Dec 2025 : For the first time, Kedarnath is experiencing no snowfall, and the region is witnessing unusually severe cold. Tourist destinations across the Himalayas, including Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir, are eagerly awaiting snow, but the absence of snowfall in Kedarnath during November and December has raised serious environmental concerns. Experts warn that this unusual phenomenon could be linked to global warming and human interference in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Typically, Kedarnath receives a thick blanket of snow during these months, ranging from two to four feet, creating a picturesque winter landscape that attracts tourists. However, this year, the Himalayan mountains appear covered with a dusty yellow surface instead of snow. The lack of snow has disappointed tourists who visit the region for winter recreation and has had a noticeable impact on the local tourism industry.

Locals and environmental specialists emphasize that while temperatures are unusually low, often dropping below zero at night, there has been no snowfall. Ponds in the region are freezing, yet the skies remain clear. Experts have described this phenomenon as a “paranormal change,” highlighting the potential long-term consequences of altered snowfall patterns.

The absence of snow is believed to be a result of climate change and human activities such as deforestation, infrastructure development, and increased pollution. Environmentalists warn that this disruption affects not only tourism but also local water resources, glaciers, and the overall water balance of the Himalayan region. The Himalayan snowpack plays a critical role in feeding rivers and maintaining ecological stability, and its disruption could have far-reaching consequences.

Reports indicate that other high-altitude areas in Jammu & Kashmir are also experiencing similar snowfall deficits. Despite cold temperatures, snow has not settled, prompting concerns from experts and local authorities. The tourism department has noted that winter sports such as trekking, skiing, and other recreational activities could be adversely affected. Additionally, the water supply from glaciers and rivers originating in the Himalayas could face long-term challenges if this pattern persists.

The absence of snow has also led to increased dust accumulation on mountain surfaces, which can negatively impact glacier health and soil fertility. Experts suggest that urgent measures are needed to strengthen environmental protection and implement stricter climate policies. Maintaining the natural balance in the Himalayas is essential not only for local ecosystems but also for agriculture, water supply, and ecological stability across India.

Environmentalists, local authorities, and concerned citizens are raising alarms about the continuing disruption of snowfall patterns. If global warming and human activities are not controlled, the natural equilibrium of the Himalayas could be destabilized further, posing serious threats to tourism, water resources, agriculture, and the overall ecology of the region.

The current situation in Kedarnath serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the Himalayan environment and the urgent need for coordinated efforts to mitigate climate change impacts and preserve the region’s ecological and cultural heritage.
