ECI Reports 91.46 Lakh ‘Logical Discrepancy’ Cases in West Bengal Special Intensive Revision
Kolkata, Jan 2026 : The Election Commission of India (ECI) has provided a detailed breakdown of 91.46 lakh “logical discrepancy” cases identified during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, conducted through a process called progeny mapping.
Voters classified under “logical discrepancy” are those whose records show unusual family-tree data, such as age inconsistencies or multiple links to a single parent. Initially, at the end of the enumeration phase—the first stage of the three-stage SIR exercise—the ECI had flagged 1.36 crore such cases. After careful scrutiny, the number has now been scaled down to 91.46 lakh.
These cases are in addition to 58.20 lakh “excluded voters” and 30 lakh “unmapped voters”—individuals who could not establish any link with the 2002 voters’ list either through “self-mapping” or progeny mapping. Currently, the Commission is examining the unmapped voter cases, while the logical discrepancy cases will be addressed in the next stage.
Sources in the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal, revealed that among the 91.46 lakh cases, the largest category—51 lakh cases—pertains to name mismatches with the 2002 voters’ list, the last time SIR was conducted in the state. The second-highest category—24 lakh cases—relates to six or more voters linked to a single father.
Other notable findings include 4.75 lakh voters with age differences of 15 years or less than their father’s age, and 8.41 lakh voters whose age exceeds their father’s by 50 years or more. Additionally, there are three lakh voters whose age difference from their grandfather is 40 years or less.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has urged the Commission to formally release details of these logical discrepancy cases rather than sharing information informally with media outlets.
The draft voters’ list in West Bengal was published on December 16, 2025, and the final voters’ list is scheduled for February 4, 2026. Following its publication, the ECI is expected to announce polling dates for the crucial Assembly elections in the state this year.
The ongoing SIR exercise, including progeny mapping and verification of logical discrepancy cases, underscores the Commission’s effort to ensure accuracy and integrity in the electoral rolls, ahead of one of the most closely watched state elections in India.
