‘Bastar Pandum’, a Vibrant Festival of Tribal Culture, Tradition and Folk Life, to Begin from January 10

Raipur, January 2026 : Chhattisgarh’s largest celebration of tribal identity, folk culture and age-old traditions, ‘Bastar Pandum’, is set to begin with great enthusiasm and dignity from January 10, 2026. The festival is a unique initiative to showcase the rich tribal heritage of the Bastar region by bringing together its lifestyle, folk arts, traditional cuisine, attire, songs, music and dance forms on a single platform.

The word ‘Pandum’ itself means a festival, and in every sense, this event represents the soul of Bastar, its cultural consciousness and its vibrant community life. Bastar Pandum is not merely a cultural programme; it has emerged as a powerful medium for preserving and promoting the tribal legacy that has been passed down through generations.

This year, Bastar Pandum will be organised in three phases — at the Gram Panchayat level, Block and District level, and finally at the Divisional/State-level grand finale. Through these stages, tribal artists, craftsmen, folk singers and dance troupes from even the most remote areas of the Bastar division will get an opportunity to showcase their talent. Traditional folk dances of various tribal communities such as Madiya, Muria, Gond, Halba and Bhatra will be performed. The rhythmic sounds of traditional musical instruments like the mandar, dhol, tiriya and flute will fill the atmosphere with festive energy.

During the festival, the distinctive tribal attire, garments adorned with natural colours, exquisite ornaments and traditional adornments will captivate visitors. Bastar Pandum also plays a vital role in connecting the younger generation with their cultural roots. Exhibitions of traditional tribal cuisine, beverages, coarse grains, forest produce such as tubers and roots, leafy vegetables and medicinal foods will be organised, promoting indigenous nutritional knowledge and local food culture.

Artists, groups and participants who deliver outstanding performances in competitions held at various levels will be honoured with cash awards and certificates, boosting their morale and contributing to the preservation of folk arts. Through Bastar Pandum, continuous efforts are being made to safeguard tribal lifestyles, traditions, art forms and cultural values.

The festival not only strengthens cultural identity but also gives momentum to tourism and the local economy. Today, Bastar Pandum has become more than just a festival—it stands as a symbol of Bastar’s identity, pride and cultural heritage. Tourists and culture enthusiasts from across the country and the state get a rare opportunity to experience the true spirit of Bastar up close through this vibrant celebration.
