World Wetlands Day: Over 1.48 crore students of the state will become messengers of environmental conservation

Competitions will be held in 1,32,000 council schools of the state

On World Wetlands Day, about 1.48 crore students will participate in poster and slogan competitions

The event will be organized under the theme ‘Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge – Cultural Heritage’

Lucknow, January 2026 : On the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2026, a large-scale awareness campaign on environmental conservation will be conducted across the state. Under the guidance and leadership of Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh, poster and slogan writing competitions will be organized in approximately 132,000 council schools of Uttar Pradesh. Over 1.48 crore students will participate in this statewide campaign.

All the districts have already been instructed to ensure the organization of competitions by 16 January 2026 and to upload the details of participating students on the portal.

This event will be organized under the theme ‘Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge – Cultural Heritage’ of World Wetlands Day 2026, as per the directions of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, and the National Museum of Natural History. The objective of the competition is to connect students with the importance of wetland conservation, environmental balance, traditional knowledge, and cultural heritage.

Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh said that environmental conservation is not just a need of today, but the greatest necessity of the future. Through World Wetlands Day 2026, this effort to connect crores of students of council schools with nature and traditional knowledge will help develop a sense of responsibility and sensitivity in the new generation. The state government is continuously working to strengthen environmental awareness along with quality and value-based education.

According to the instructions, a poster competition will be organized for students of classes 6 to 8, while a slogan writing competition will be organized for students of classes 9 to 12. Posters and slogans will be prepared on A-3 size drawing sheets, and students will be allowed to use any type of colours.

To ensure identification of students, it will be mandatory to mention the student’s name, class, school name, e-mail ID, name of the headmaster or teacher, and mobile number on the back of each entry. Along with this, attaching the school identity card will also be necessary.

Information about the competitions held at the school level and the selected entries will be uploaded on the Mission Life portal. After this, the selected posters and slogans will be sent within the prescribed time limit to the National Museum of Natural History, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, New Delhi. At the national level, first, second, third, and 10 consolation prizes will be awarded.

Director General, School Education, Monika Rani said, “The competition across 1,32,000 council schools of the state will not only provide a platform for students’ creativity but will also make them aware of the importance of wetland conservation. Through posters and slogans, students will become partners in conveying the message of environmental conservation to society.”
