Varun Chakaravarthy’s Magic Spell Powers India to Record 93-Run Win Over Namibia

New Delhi, Feb 2026 : Defending champions India delivered a commanding performance to thrash Namibia by a massive 93 runs in their Group A clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday. A destructive batting display, followed by a clinical all-round bowling effort led by wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, ensured India registered their biggest-ever victory in Men’s T20 World Cup history.

India piled up an imposing 209 for 9 in their 20 overs after being asked to bat, with explosive half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya forming the backbone of the innings. Namibia’s captain Gerhard Erasmus stood out with the ball for the visitors, picking up four wickets for 20 runs with his deceptive slingy action and clever variations, but the damage had already been done.

India’s innings began on a blistering note as Ishan Kishan immediately put the Namibia attack under pressure. The left-hander unleashed a flurry of boundaries with his trademark fearless strokeplay, racing to a half-century in no time. Kishan’s 61 came off just 24 balls and featured a mix of clean lofted hits and crisp drives that delighted the home crowd and set the tone for a high-scoring contest.

Hardik Pandya complemented Kishan perfectly at the other end. Playing with authority and composure, Pandya countered Namibia’s attempts to slow the scoring by targeting both pace and spin. His well-crafted 52 off 28 balls ensured India maintained momentum even after losing quick wickets in the middle overs. Though India lost wickets at regular intervals towards the end, the strong foundation allowed them to cross the 200-run mark, finishing at a formidable 209 for 9.

In reply, Namibia began their chase with surprising intent. Openers Louren Steenkamp and Jan Frylinck attacked from the outset, taking on India’s fast bowlers during the powerplay. Frylinck struck Hardik Pandya for a four and a six before driving and pulling Arshdeep Singh for consecutive boundaries. Steenkamp also found his rhythm, carving Arshdeep for two fours and a six slashed over short third man. Namibia reached a healthy 57 for 1 at the end of the powerplay, briefly raising hopes of a competitive chase.

However, the match turned decisively in India’s favour with the introduction of Varun Chakaravarthy. After Namibia collected 10 runs from Jasprit Bumrah’s opening over, Chakaravarthy struck immediately in the eighth over. His very first delivery, a perfectly disguised googly, crashed into the stumps to dismiss Steenkamp for 29. The wicket halted Namibia’s momentum and exposed their middle order to sustained pressure.

Loftie-Eaton and skipper Gerhard Erasmus attempted to rebuild, but Chakaravarthy’s control and variations made scoring difficult. Although Erasmus welcomed Axar Patel with back-to-back slog-swept sixes in the ninth over, the respite was short-lived. Chakaravarthy returned to dismantle the chase further, inducing Loftie-Eaton to hole out to long-off before bowling JJ Smit with another sharp googly.

Axar Patel soon joined the wicket-taking act, dismissing Erasmus, who holed out to long-off, and then removing Malan Kruger, who top-edged a sweep to short fine leg where the catch was safely held. The collapse gathered pace as Namibia struggled to cope with India’s relentless pressure.

Jasprit Bumrah, playing in place of Mohammed Siraj, showcased his class by nailing a pinpoint yorker to bowl Ruben Trumpelmann. Hardik Pandya chipped in with two wickets, while Shivam Dube sealed the innings by dismissing Zane Green via hit wicket. Every Indian bowler contributed, underlining the depth and balance of the side.

Namibia were eventually bowled out for 116 in 18.2 overs, handing India a resounding 93-run victory. The emphatic win not only reinforced India’s status as tournament favourites but also marked their tenth consecutive victory in Men’s T20 World Cup history.

Brief Scores:
India 209/9 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 61, Hardik Pandya 52; Gerhard Erasmus 4-20) beat Namibia 116 all out in 18.2 overs (Louren Steenkamp 29, Jan Frylinck 22; Varun Chakaravarthy 3-7, Axar Patel 2-20) by 93 runs.
