BJP Wave Sweeps Maharashtra Civic Polls, Signals Historic Shift in Urban Power Centres
Mumbai, Jan 2026 : A strong Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surge is being witnessed across Maharashtra in the ongoing civic elections, with early trends indicating a decisive shift in the State’s urban political landscape. The most significant development has emerged from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country’s richest civic body, where the BJP is on course to become the single largest party—an achievement that would mark a historic first.

According to trends available for 158 of the 227 BMC seats, the BJP is leading in 65 wards. Its ally, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, is ahead in 18 seats, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction is leading in 52. If these trends translate into final results, the BJP will surpass all rivals, ending decades of Shiv Sena dominance in Mumbai’s civic administration. For the BJP, which has long aspired to control the BMC, the outcome would represent the realisation of a long-cherished political goal.
The developments in Mumbai also point to a broader weakening of the Thackeray family’s traditional stronghold. While the Thackerays never ruled Maharashtra independently, Mumbai and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region remained their bastion for decades. A setback in the BMC is therefore seen as a symbolic and strategic blow, raising questions about the future electoral prospects of the Uddhav Sena in forthcoming contests.
The BJP’s commanding performance is not limited to Mumbai. In Nagpur, the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the party has emerged overwhelmingly strong. Of the 151 wards in the city, trends have been declared for 129, with the BJP leading in 94 seats. Political observers believe that once trends for all wards are available, the BJP could cross the 100-seat mark on its own. In contrast, its ally, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, is leading in just two seats, while the Congress trails far behind with leads in only 31 wards.
Nagpur’s results underscore the BJP’s deep-rooted organisational strength in the city and reflect the absence of any serious challenge from rival parties. The outcome further consolidates the BJP’s position in key urban centres and reinforces its dominance in regions considered politically significant.
A similar pattern is unfolding in Pune, another major urban hub. The BJP is currently leading in 47 seats, while all other parties combined are ahead in only 22. Even the combined presence of the Nationalist Congress Party factions led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar appears insufficient to match the BJP’s momentum. The trends suggest that the BJP is set to retain firm control over Pune’s civic politics.
Politically, these results are expected to significantly enhance the stature of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. A sweeping civic mandate will strengthen the “Brand Fadnavis” within the BJP and bolster his position within the ruling alliance, particularly at a time when allies such as Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde appear to be facing relative setbacks.
For the Thackeray brothers, the civic elections were widely viewed as a battle for political survival. With their traditional dominance visibly eroding, the road ahead appears increasingly challenging. As Maharashtra’s urban electorate signals a clear preference for the BJP, the State’s civic and political dynamics seem poised for a historic realignment.
