Nitin Nabin to Take Charge as BJP National President, Set to Lead Party’s Organisational Future

New Delhi, Jan 2026 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Nabin is all set to assume office as the new National President of the BJP on Tuesday, marking an important transition in the organisational leadership of the ruling party. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several senior leaders, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, national office bearers, state unit presidents, and members of the party’s national executive.

The BJP formally declared Nitin Nabin as the sole candidate for the post of National President on Monday after the nomination and scrutiny process concluded without any rival contenders. This paved the way for his unopposed election as the 12th national president of the party. The announcement was made late in the evening by National Returning Officer K. Laxman, who confirmed that only Nabin’s name remained in the fray after the completion of the nomination and withdrawal process.

According to the Returning Officer, a total of 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in support of Nitin Nabin between 2 pm and 4 pm on Monday. All the nominations were found valid upon scrutiny, and no withdrawals were recorded. Importantly, no other candidates filed nomination papers, underscoring the strong organisational consensus behind Nabin’s elevation.

The election process gathered momentum after 30 of the BJP’s 36 state unit presidents were elected, comfortably crossing the minimum requirement of 50 per cent as mandated by the party Constitution for initiating the national presidential election. The formal schedule of events was notified on January 16, 2026, along with the publication of the electoral roll. Nominations opened and closed on Monday, and scrutiny was completed soon after.

Nitin Nabin, 45, has been serving as the National Working President since December 14, 2025. His elevation has received overwhelming support from the BJP’s top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and outgoing BJP President J.P. Nadda. Senior party leaders, Chief Ministers, and representatives from multiple states personally submitted nomination papers in his favour, highlighting broad-based support across the organisation.

As the sole candidate, Nabin will be formally elected by the BJP’s electoral college, which comprises members of the national council and state councils. As per party rules, a candidate must be proposed by at least 20 members of the electoral college from a state and must have completed a minimum of 15 years of active membership in the party, criteria that Nabin comfortably meets.

Nabin’s ascent is widely seen as a strategic move by the BJP to infuse youthful energy into its organisational structure while maintaining ideological continuity and administrative experience. With key electoral battles ahead, his leadership is expected to focus on strengthening the party at the grassroots level, enhancing coordination between the organisation and government, and preparing the BJP for future national and state-level challenges.
