Bengaluru, Oct 2026 : The BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance has swept all four seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections for graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies, dealing a setback to the ruling Congress. The results, announced after counting on Tuesday, October 27, saw the opposition alliance win every contested seat, leaving the Congress without a victory.
The elections were held on October 23 for two graduates’ constituencies and two teachers’ constituencies. The results were closely watched as a test of coordination between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and JD(S), which are part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and the Congress’s support among teachers and graduates.
In the Bengaluru Teachers’ constituency, JD(S) candidate A P Ranganath defeated Congress veteran and five-time MLC Puttanna by 908 votes. Ranganath secured 10,810 votes against Puttanna’s 9,902, wresting the seat from the ruling party.
The BJP retained the North-East Teachers’ constituency, where its candidate Shashil G Namoshi defeated Congress nominee Sharanappa Mattur by 3,297 votes. Namoshi secured 15,596 first-preference votes, while Mattur received 12,299.
In the West Graduates’ constituency, BJP candidate S V Sankanur registered his third consecutive victory, defeating Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai. The BJP completed its sweep when K M Suresh won the South-East Graduates’ constituency.
The results underline the opposition alliance’s performance across both teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies, with the BJP retaining its existing strongholds and the JD(S) capturing the Bengaluru Teachers’ seat from the Congress.
Setback for ruling Congress
The outcome represents a political setback for the Congress leadership in Karnataka, particularly as the party had campaigned to retain its existing representation and make gains in the other constituencies.
The results also highlight the electoral benefits of coordination between the BJP and JD(S), which contested the elections as allies. Their combined performance could provide fresh momentum to the opposition ahead of future electoral contests in the state.
The Congress’s failure to win any of the four seats is likely to prompt scrutiny of its campaign strategy and outreach among graduates and teachers, constituencies that often play an important role in Legislative Council elections.
Implications ahead of 2028 Assembly polls
The BJP-JD(S) alliance is expected to draw political encouragement from the sweep as Karnataka moves towards the 2028 Assembly elections. However, the Legislative Council results alone do not determine the stability of the Congress government.
The Karnataka Legislative Council has 75 members, and the Congress’s broader position in the House must be assessed separately from the outcome of these four constituencies.
While the results offer the opposition alliance an opportunity to strengthen its political narrative, their implications for the next Assembly election will depend on wider voter sentiment, alliance coordination and the performance of the parties across Karnataka.
