Qatar Presents New Iran Peace Proposal as US, Israel Threaten Renewed Strikes

Tehran, October 2026 : Qatari mediators have presented Iran with a fresh draft agreement aimed at ending the ongoing war involving the United States and Israel, with Tehran expected to respond by the end of the week, an official familiar with the negotiations said on Wednesday.

The proposal, presented on Sunday, outlines a seven-day timeline to address concerns raised by Tehran and Washington. It includes daily confidence-building measures that both sides would be expected to implement as part of efforts to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for a broader peace agreement.

The proposed process could begin early next week, with several countries expected to serve as guarantors of the agreement, the official said.

Qatar and Pakistan have been spearheading diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which began in February with US and Israeli military action against Iran. The war has disrupted global shipping routes, threatened oil supplies and intensified instability across the Middle East.

Ahead of Sunday's meeting in Tehran, concerns emerged that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could order fresh attacks against Iran during the week, the official said. Netanyahu is also seeking another term in an upcoming general election.

Trump warns of fresh military action

US President Donald Trump reiterated his threat on Friday to launch renewed strikes against Iran if hostilities resume, adding to uncertainty surrounding the diplomatic initiative.

Meanwhile, Iranian security officials mentioned that Tehran had prepared detailed plans to target undersea cables in the Gulf if the United States and Israel resumed their attacks. Such a move could raise further concerns over regional communications infrastructure and security.

Earlier mediation efforts had produced an interim peace agreement in June. However, the arrangement quickly unravelled, highlighting the challenges facing international efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire.

Regional tensions have also been fuelled by repeated attacks by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude oil exporter, in recent weeks.

The latest Qatar-backed peace proposal represents another diplomatic attempt to prevent renewed military escalation, protect energy supplies and restore stability across the region. Its prospects will depend on Tehran's response and the willingness of the parties to implement the proposed confidence-building measures.
