New Delhi, Aug 2026 : India is preparing to conduct another important round of flight trials of its indigenously developed 500-kg Precision-Guided Bomb (PGB-500), in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s capability to produce advanced air-launched weapons domestically.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) are expected to undertake joint carriage and release trials of the weapon during September and October 2026. The PGB-500 will be integrated with the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft for the trials, which are reportedly planned at Air Force Station Jodhpur and the Chandan firing range near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

The upcoming tests are expected to examine the weapon’s integration with the aircraft and its performance during release. They will form an important part of the continuing development process for the indigenous precision-strike weapon.

The Ministry of Defence has also taken steps to facilitate the trials, with a recent tender issued through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) seeking technical support for the flight-test programme. The support will be provided in accordance with requirements laid down by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a key DRDO laboratory associated with the development of the weapon.

The PGB-500 is being developed as a dedicated 500-kg precision-guided air-to-ground munition. Its weight and payload make it suitable for engaging high-value and hardened targets, including military infrastructure, command facilities, bunkers and other critical installations.

Unlike conventional unguided bombs, precision-guided weapons are designed to improve accuracy by combining a suitable guidance and navigation system with the warhead and airframe. The PGB-500 is expected to employ modern navigation technologies to provide greater accuracy during its terminal phase and improve the effectiveness of air strikes against designated targets.

The selection of the Su-30MKI as the launch platform is significant. The twin-engine fighter has substantial payload capacity and long-range operating capability, making it well suited to carrying heavy air-to-ground weapons. The aircraft has also become an important test platform for several indigenous weapons being developed for the IAF.

DRDO has previously used the Su-30MKI for trials involving heavy Indian-developed weapons, including the 1,000-kg Gaurav long-range glide bomb and earlier 500-kg-class bomb configurations. Its extensive weapons-carrying capability allows engineers to evaluate large munitions without requiring major compromises in aircraft performance.

The PGB-500 programme is part of a broader effort to expand India's portfolio of indigenous precision-strike weapons. In recent years, the country has focused on developing guidance kits, glide bombs, stand-off weapons and other systems that can provide fighter aircraft with the ability to engage targets accurately from considerable distances.

Earlier this year, DRDO and the IAF also demonstrated progress in another area of aerial weapon technology with the flight testing of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) system from a Jaguar aircraft. TARA is designed as an augmentation kit that can enhance the range and precision of existing unguided bombs.

The PGB-500, however, follows a different development philosophy. Rather than being an add-on system for an existing bomb, it is being developed as a purpose-built precision-guided munition based on requirements formulated by ARDE. The distinction highlights India's effort to develop complete indigenous weapon systems alongside technologies that upgrade existing inventories.

The forthcoming Su-30MKI trials are expected to focus on several parameters. These include safe carriage of the weapon, aircraft-weapon compatibility, release characteristics, guidance performance, navigation accuracy and overall system reliability. The tests will also help engineers assess the bomb under different operational conditions before further stages of evaluation.

The development of weapons such as the PGB-500 could provide the IAF with greater flexibility in selecting weapons for precision air strikes. Indigenous availability would also reduce dependence on overseas suppliers and give the armed forces greater control over production, replenishment and future upgrades.

India's expanding indigenous weapons programme has increasingly involved the DRDO, public-sector defence companies and private-sector manufacturers. The objective is not only to develop individual weapons but also to establish a wider domestic ecosystem capable of designing, producing, testing and upgrading sophisticated military systems.

For the IAF, this growing portfolio of precision weapons is particularly relevant as its fighter fleet includes platforms capable of carrying substantial weapon loads over long distances. The Su-30MKI, along with aircraft such as the Rafale, Tejas and Mirage 2000, forms a significant part of India's precision-strike capability.

Large-scale exercises have also provided opportunities to demonstrate the operational use of precision weapons. During Vayu Shakti-2026, Indian fighter aircraft showcased their ability to conduct simulated strikes against targets including runways, command centres and hardened positions.

If the upcoming PGB-500 trials meet their objectives, the weapon could represent another important addition to India's indigenous air-to-ground arsenal. Beyond the immediate capability offered by a 500-kg precision munition, the programme will contribute to the country's broader goal of developing increasingly sophisticated aerial weapons without excessive dependence on imports.

The September-October trials will therefore be closely watched as another step in India's drive towards greater defence self-reliance. By combining indigenous guidance technology, heavy warhead capability and established fighter platforms such as the Su-30MKI, the PGB-500 programme reflects the IAF and DRDO's continuing effort to build a more capable and domestically supported precision-strike arsenal.
