New Delhi, Aug 2026 : The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded its online FASTag Local Pass facility to 121 toll plazas across the country, allowing eligible local commuters to obtain monthly passes digitally through the Rajmargyatra mobile application, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said on Tuesday.
The initiative is aimed at making travel on National Highways more convenient and citizen-friendly by eliminating the need for eligible commuters to visit toll plazas physically and submit documents manually for obtaining local passes.
Under the new digital system, eligible residents can apply for a monthly Local Pass through the Rajmargyatra app, significantly simplifying the process. Once approved, the pass allows unlimited travel through the designated toll plaza during the month, subject to applicable rules and conditions.
The facility was first introduced in July 2026 at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). Following its initial rollout, the system has now been extended to more than 120 toll plazas across different parts of the country. The government plans to expand the facility to additional toll plazas in the coming months.
According to the ministry, residents living within a 20-km radius of an eligible toll plaza can apply for the digital Local Pass, provided they meet the prescribed eligibility criteria.
Earlier, commuters seeking local passes were required to visit the concerned toll plaza in person and submit supporting documents to establish their residential address and fulfil other eligibility requirements. The digital system removes much of this manual process and enables verification electronically.
The Digital Local Pass facility uses consent-based integration with government digital platforms such as DigiLocker and VAHAN to access and verify relevant information. This includes details relating to the applicant’s residential address, vehicle and linked FASTag.
Eligibility is further verified through a GIS-based system, which determines whether the applicant’s registered residential address falls within the prescribed 20-km radius of the relevant toll plaza.
The ministry said the technology-driven system is expected to improve transparency and efficiency in tolling operations while making local toll services more accessible to eligible commuters.
“The system also reduces scope for manual intervention and streamlines the delivery of local toll services to eligible commuters,” the ministry said.
The expansion of the online facility is part of the government’s broader efforts to leverage digital technology to simplify public services and improve the experience of National Highway users. By integrating multiple government databases and digital verification mechanisms, the system is expected to reduce paperwork, minimise physical visits and make the issuance of local passes faster and more transparent.
With the facility already operational at 121 toll plazas, NHAI is expected to gradually extend the digital Local Pass service to more locations, providing greater convenience to residents who regularly use specific toll plazas for local travel.
