Spain Train Collision: At Least 46 Feared Dead as High-Speed Trains Collide in Toledo

Toledo, October 2026 : At least 46 people were reportedly killed after two high-speed trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday, prompting a major emergency response. Local media reported that the death toll could rise as rescue teams continued searching for survivors and assisting injured passengers.

The accident involved a Renfe AVE service and a private Iryo train near the railway station in Urda. Emergency services received the alert at 8:54 am local time following the collision. Earlier reports from Spain-based media, including Sur in English, cited local authorities as confirming at least 39 fatalities.

The Castilla-La Mancha 112 emergency service deployed fire crews from Alcazar de San Juan and Orgaz, Civil Protection teams from nearby municipalities and three medical helicopters to the accident site. Rescue personnel were working to reach passengers trapped in the damaged carriages and transport the injured to hospitals.

According to Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, the two trains were carrying a combined total of 544 passengers. The Iryo train had 146 passengers and a baby on board, while the Renfe train was carrying 397 passengers, El Pais reported.

The exact cause of the Spain train accident remains unknown. A spokesperson for the Spanish Transport Ministry said preliminary indications suggested that the AVE train may have rear-ended the Iryo service. The impact reportedly caused two carriages of the Iryo train to derail and fall down an embankment.

High-speed rail services suspended

Following the collision, high-speed rail traffic along the corridor connecting Madrid with Andalusia was suspended from 8:54 am local time. The disruption also affected medium-distance services, leaving passengers facing cancellations and uncertainty over alternative travel arrangements.

In a statement posted on X, Iryo said it had suspended all services departing from Madrid’s Atocha station and heading towards the southern corridor. The company said it had activated all emergency protocols and was working closely with authorities to manage the situation.

Renfe also confirmed the suspension of railway services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia.

Authorities have not announced when train services will resume. Rescue operations and investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and determine the full extent of casualties and damage.
