Hyderabad, September 2026 : The Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday sought Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla’s intervention to press the state government to immediately clear long-pending fee reimbursement dues, which the party claimed have severely affected lakhs of students and educational institutions across the state.
A delegation of BJP leaders led by state president N. Ramchander Rao met Governor Shukla and submitted a memorandum urging him to intervene in the matter and direct the Congress-led state government to release the pending amount. The BJP claimed that fee reimbursement dues had accumulated to around Rs 15,000 crore, affecting nearly 40 lakh students, particularly those belonging to economically weaker and disadvantaged sections.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Ramchander Rao accused the Congress government of ignoring the concerns of students and educational institutions. He alleged that instead of addressing the issue, the government had responded to protests by using police force, registering cases and arresting activists associated with the BJP’s Yuva Morcha.
Rao said the delay in releasing reimbursement funds was creating serious difficulties for both students and colleges. According to him, several educational institutions were struggling to pay salaries to their teaching and non-teaching staff, with some colleges reportedly paying only around 50 per cent of salaries. He alleged that the prolonged financial crisis was adversely affecting the functioning of colleges and, in turn, the education of students.
The BJP state president further criticised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who also holds the education portfolio, for allegedly failing to respond adequately to the issue. He said the BJP had urged the Governor to put pressure on the state government to take immediate corrective measures and ensure that eligible students receive their dues.
Several Yuva Morcha activists who were allegedly injured during police lathi-charge were also part of the delegation that met the Governor. The BJP leaders explained that more than 40 lakh students from poor and weaker sections were facing difficulties because of the delay in reimbursement, including problems in obtaining educational certificates. They also highlighted the financial difficulties faced by college staff due to delayed payments.
The delegation said fee reimbursement dues had remained pending during the previous BRS government and had continued to accumulate after the Congress came to power, eventually reaching the claimed figure of Rs 15,000 crore.
The BJP also pointed out that, following directions from the High Court, reimbursement had reportedly been released only for fresh students, while students already pursuing their courses and those who had graduated were allegedly still awaiting payments.
Rao said he had undertaken a two-day hunger strike over the issue, while more than eight lakh students had written letters to the Chief Minister seeking resolution of their grievances. He alleged that despite the BJP seeking an appointment to hand over the students’ letters, the Chief Minister’s office did not provide them an opportunity to meet him.
The BJP has now urged the Governor to intervene and ensure that the pending reimbursement is released at the earliest, warning that continued delays could further deepen the crisis confronting students and educational institutions.
