BJP Headed for Decisive Victory in Assam, Exit Polls Predict Comfortable Majority
Guwahati, April 2026 : Exit poll projections for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections indicate a sweeping victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with most surveys suggesting that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is on course to secure a second consecutive term in office.
According to multiple polling agencies, the BJP is expected to comfortably cross the majority mark of 64 seats in the 126-member Assembly. Several projections even suggest that the party could win more than 80 seats on its own, underlining a strong mandate in its favour.
The opposition Indian National Congress is projected to remain a distant second, with most estimates placing its tally between 25 and 35 seats. Other regional parties and independent candidates are expected to share the remaining seats, indicating a largely bipolar contest dominated by the BJP and Congress.
Among the major surveys, Axis My India has forecast a commanding performance by the BJP, projecting it to win between 88 and 100 seats. The Congress, in contrast, is expected to secure 24 to 36 seats, reinforcing the perception of a clear gap between the ruling party and its main challenger.
Similarly, Matrize exit poll has also predicted a comfortable majority for the BJP, estimating its tally between 85 and 95 seats, while placing the Congress in the range of 25 to 32 seats. These projections point towards a consistent trend across agencies, highlighting a strong voter preference for continuity in leadership.
If these predictions hold true, it would mark another emphatic mandate for the BJP in the politically significant northeastern state and further consolidate Sarma’s leadership. The current Assembly’s term is set to end on May 20, 2026, and the formation of a new government is expected soon after the official results are declared.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP-led alliance had retained power by winning 75 seats, while the Congress-led bloc secured 50 seats. Exit polls during that election had largely aligned with the final outcome, lending a degree of credibility to current projections.
With similar trends emerging this time, attention now turns to the counting day, which will determine whether the BJP can translate these forecasts into another landslide victory in Assam.
