Exit Polls Indicate Tight Contest in West Bengal, BJP Gains Edge in Majority of Projections

Kolkata, April 2026 : Exit polls following the two-phase West Bengal Assembly elections have painted a complex and highly competitive political picture, with most surveys indicating a close contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, a majority of these projections suggest a potential shift in power, hinting at the possible end of the 15-year rule led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Among the various surveys, several agencies have projected a clear lead for the BJP. The P-MARQ exit poll estimates the BJP winning between 150 and 175 seats, while the TMC is projected to secure 118 to 138 seats. Similarly, Matrize forecasts the BJP tally at 146 to 161 seats and the TMC between 125 and 140. Chanakya Strategies also places the BJP ahead with 150 to 160 seats, compared to TMC’s 130 to 140.

Praja Polls presents one of the strongest projections in favour of the BJP, estimating a landslide victory with 178 to 208 seats, while the TMC could be restricted to 85 to 110. Poll Diary also indicates a BJP advantage, predicting 142 to 171 seats for the party and 99 to 127 for the TMC.

In contrast, a few surveys suggest a different outcome. People’s Pulse projects the TMC returning to power with 178 to 189 seats, while the BJP may secure only 96 to 110. Similarly, the Janmat exit poll predicts a comfortable majority for the TMC, estimating its tally between 195 and 205 seats, leaving the BJP far behind with 80 to 90.

Meanwhile, the JV exit poll presents a more uncertain scenario, indicating the possibility of a hung Assembly. It projects the BJP at 138 to 159 seats and the TMC at 131 to 152, suggesting a razor-thin margin between the two major parties.

Overall, the exit poll trends reflect a sharply polarised electorate. While most surveys point toward a BJP edge, a few indicate that the TMC still retains significant support, making the final outcome difficult to predict with certainty.

With counting scheduled soon, the state awaits a decisive verdict that will determine whether West Bengal witnesses a historic political transition or continuity under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.
