TVK Emerges as Front-Runner in Tamil Nadu Exit Polls, Signals Major Political Shift

Chennai, April 2026 : Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the biggest challenger in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with the latest Axis My India exit poll projecting the party in the lead and reshaping the state’s political narrative.

According to the survey, TVK is expected to win between 98 and 120 seats in the 234-member Assembly, placing it ahead of both the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance and the opposition AIADMK-led front. These projections suggest that TVK could either emerge as the single largest party or play a decisive role in the formation of the next government.

The DMK alliance, led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, is estimated to secure between 92 and 110 seats, making it a close contender. However, the numbers indicate that the ruling front may find it challenging to cross the majority mark of 118 seats on its own, raising the possibility of a hung Assembly.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K. Palaniswami and supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other partners, is projected to win only 22 to 32 seats. This marks a significant decline for the alliance, pushing it to a distant third position in the electoral race.

The exit poll, based on a large sample size of over 44,000 respondents across all constituencies, also highlights a closely contested vote share battle. Both TVK and the DMK alliance are projected to secure around 35 per cent of the vote share each, while the AIADMK alliance is expected to trail at approximately 23 per cent.

A closer look at voter demographics reveals a notable generational divide. TVK appears to have made significant gains among younger voters, particularly first-time voters aged 18–19, where it enjoys strong support. In contrast, the DMK continues to draw its core strength from older voter segments, reflecting differing political preferences across age groups.

Adding to TVK’s momentum, Vijay has emerged as the most preferred candidate for the Chief Minister’s post, securing 37 per cent support. He is closely followed by Stalin at 35 per cent, while Palaniswami trails with 22 per cent, indicating a shifting political mood in the state.

The survey also underscores a growing desire for change among voters, with 35 per cent citing it as the primary factor influencing their choice. This sentiment appears to have significantly contributed to TVK’s rapid rise in the political landscape.

With no alliance projected to comfortably cross the majority mark, the exit poll points to a highly competitive and potentially fragmented mandate. As Tamil Nadu awaits the official results on May 4, the findings suggest that the 2026 elections could mark the beginning of a new political chapter, with TVK emerging as a formidable force in state politics.
