Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan Meets PM Modi in First Post-Poll Interaction, Seeks Centre’s Support for Development Push
New Delhi, May 2026 : In his first official meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after leading the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) to a decisive victory in the Kerala Assembly elections, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan on Tuesday held key discussions in New Delhi, marking the beginning of the new state government’s formal engagement with the Centre.
The Prime Minister’s Office shared photographs of the meeting, highlighting the significance of the interaction between the two leaders. The nearly 20-minute meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office and comes just days after the change of government in Kerala, ending the decade-long rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Chief Minister Satheesan was accompanied by Kerala Chief Secretary A. Jayathilak during the meeting, underlining the administrative importance of the discussions alongside political considerations.
According to sources, the Chief Minister submitted a detailed memorandum to the Prime Minister, seeking central assistance for several ongoing and proposed development projects in the state. The memorandum is also understood to have included requests for financial support and intervention on a range of pending issues affecting Kerala’s fiscal and infrastructural needs.
While official details of the conversation were not released, it is learnt that key subjects such as infrastructure development, highway and railway projects, disaster relief assistance, and Kerala’s overall financial situation were discussed during the meeting.
The interaction is being seen as an important early step by the newly formed UDF government to establish a constructive working relationship with the Centre on development and funding matters, despite political differences at the national level.
CM Satheesan, however, did not respond to media queries after the meeting and maintained silence on the outcome of his discussions with the Prime Minister.
As part of his two-day visit to the national capital, the Chief Minister is currently staying at Kerala House, where he is holding a series of high-level meetings with central ministers.
Later in the day, Satheesan is scheduled to meet Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to seek enhanced financial support for Kerala, which continues to face fiscal constraints and rising developmental expenditure.
On Wednesday, the Chief Minister is expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. These meetings are likely to focus on administrative coordination, central funding, education policy matters and internal security-related issues relevant to the state.
He is expected to return to Thiruvananthapuram after completing his engagements in Delhi.
The visit is being closely observed in both political and administrative circles, as it signals the UDF government’s intent to adopt a pragmatic approach in dealing with the BJP-led central government. Despite ideological differences, the new Kerala administration appears keen to prioritise development cooperation, fiscal support and project approvals through sustained engagement with the Centre.
Observers note that the outcome of these early meetings could set the tone for Centre–State relations during the new government’s tenure, particularly on matters of funding, infrastructure expansion and disaster management support for Kerala.
