Sindhu’s Australian Open Run Ends in Semifinals Against Yamaguchi
Sydney, June 2026 : Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu’s quest for her first final appearance of the 2026 season came to an end on Saturday as she suffered a straight-games defeat to reigning world champion Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles semifinals of the Australian Badminton Open.
The two-time Olympic medallist produced a spirited display, particularly in a closely fought opening game, but eventually went down 20-22, 12-21 to the Japanese third seed in a 43-minute contest at the BWF Super 500 tournament in Sydney.
The defeat marked another frustrating near miss for Sindhu, who has shown encouraging signs throughout the season but is still searching for a breakthrough title run. The Australian Open semifinal was her second appearance in the last four of a BWF World Tour event this year, following her semifinal finish at the Malaysia Open in January.
The opening game lived up to expectations, with both players engaging in long rallies and high-quality shot-making. Sindhu looked confident from the outset and managed to maintain a slight edge during the early stages of the contest. Her aggressive approach and sharp court coverage helped her take a narrow lead into the mid-game interval.
However, Yamaguchi, one of the most consistent performers on the international circuit, responded strongly after the break. The Japanese star reeled off six consecutive points to seize momentum and place Sindhu under pressure. Despite the setback, the Indian fought back admirably, recovering the deficit and pushing the game into a tense finish.
At 20-19, Sindhu saved a game point and appeared poised to force the opener into extra exchanges. But Yamaguchi remained composed under pressure, winning the crucial points to claim the game 22-20 and gain a significant psychological advantage.
The loss of the first game appeared to affect Sindhu’s momentum as Yamaguchi took complete control of the second. After a competitive start, the world No. 3 unleashed a seven-point streak that effectively broke the Indian’s resistance. From that point onward, Yamaguchi dictated the pace of the rallies, forcing errors and limiting Sindhu’s attacking opportunities.
Sindhu struggled to regain her rhythm as Yamaguchi maintained her dominance and comfortably closed out the second game 21-12 to secure a place in the final.
The victory further strengthened Yamaguchi’s impressive head-to-head record against the Indian star. The Japanese shuttler now leads their career meetings 14-15, having claimed her 14th win in 29 encounters between the two accomplished players.
Sindhu’s defeat also signalled the end of India’s campaign at the Australian Open. Earlier in the tournament, the men’s doubles pair of M.R. Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan bowed out in the quarterfinals after being forced to retire during their match against Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Liu Kuang-Heng. India’s men’s singles players had also exited in the opening rounds, leaving Sindhu as the country’s final hope in Sydney.
Despite the disappointment, Sindhu can take positives from another deep run in a major tournament as she continues to rebuild consistency and confidence against the world’s top players.
The focus for Indian badminton players will now shift to the Macau Open Super 300 tournament next week, where Sindhu and her compatriots will aim to convert promising performances into podium finishes.
