Amad Diallo’s Late Strike Gives Ivory Coast Winning Start Against Ecuador

Philadelphia, June 2026 : Manchester United winger Amad Diallo emerged as the hero for Ivory Coast, scoring a dramatic 90th-minute winner to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in an entertaining FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E clash at the Philadelphia Stadium on Monday (IST).

Just when the contest appeared destined to end in a goalless draw, substitute Amad kept his composure to curl a precise shot into the bottom corner, handing the Elephants a memorable victory in their first World Cup appearance since 2014.

The result lifted Ivory Coast to second place in Group E, behind Germany, who had thrashed Curacao 7-1 in their opening match.

The game was packed with action from the outset, with Ecuador creating the better chances during an exhilarating first half. However, the South Americans were repeatedly denied by the woodwork.

Their first close call came when John Yeboah unleashed a powerful effort from outside the penalty area that crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, Alan Minda latched onto a clever pass from Pedro Vite and curled a shot beyond the reach of the goalkeeper, only to see the ball strike the bar once again.

Despite Ecuador’s early dominance, Ivory Coast gradually grew into the contest. Young winger Yan Diomande was a constant threat down the right flank, using his pace and skill to trouble the Ecuadorian defence.

Diomande’s lively display also created history. At 19 years and 212 days old, he became the first teenager ever to represent Ivory Coast in a FIFA World Cup match.

The Elephants nearly found the breakthrough when Bazoumana Toure fired a low effort toward goal, but Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez reacted brilliantly with a fingertip save to keep the scores level.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with chances flowing at both ends. Veteran striker Enner Valencia came agonisingly close for Ecuador when his effort from a tight angle struck the post.

Ivory Coast also had their share of misfortune. Elye Wahi connected well with a first-time strike, but his effort cannoned off the crossbar, adding to the growing tally of shots denied by the frame of the goal.

As the match wore on, Ivory Coast increasingly asserted control through superior possession, while Ecuador retreated deeper in search of a point.

Their persistence finally paid off in dramatic fashion in the dying moments. With the clock ticking into the 90th minute, Amad Diallo found space inside the box and calmly slotted his shot into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Ivory Coast players and supporters.

The late winner ensured a dream return to the World Cup stage for the African side and gave them a crucial three points in what promises to be a fiercely competitive Group E.

Score: Ivory Coast 1 (Amad Diallo 90′) beat Ecuador 0.
