New Zealand Welcomes US-Iran Deal, Says Strait Reopening Will Aid Global Trade
Wellington, June 2026 : New Zealand on Monday welcomed progress toward a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step toward reducing tensions in the Middle East and restoring stability to global trade and energy markets.
New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the proposed agreement could help ease uncertainty in a region that plays a critical role in the world economy.
“This pivotal, constructive deal is a step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in a region that is critical to global economic security,” Peters said in a statement.
He highlighted the significance of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors for oil and cargo shipments. According to Peters, disruptions in the waterway have had far-reaching economic consequences, not only for New Zealand but also for Pacific nations that rely heavily on stable global supply chains.
Peters noted that Wellington supports efforts aimed at restoring normal maritime traffic through the strategic passage.
“We welcome steps that will enable the safe reopening of this vital maritime route and restore confidence in key supply chains,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of diplomacy, the Foreign Minister said dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve longstanding disputes and urged all parties to build on the current momentum.
Calling the agreement “a good first step,” Peters encouraged further negotiations to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also welcomed the reported breakthrough, describing it as a positive development for international security and economic stability.
Taking to social media platform X, Luxon wrote that the agreement could help ease the economic pressures faced by households.
“The conflict has hit Kiwis’ back pockets and put pressure on household budgets,” he said.
He added that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would help normalise trade routes and improve energy flows.
“Reopening the Strait of Hormuz will help restore stable trade routes, get fuel flowing, and keep our economy moving,” the Prime Minister stated.
The reactions from New Zealand came after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US naval blockade imposed during months of heightened tensions.
In a social media post, Trump declared: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!”
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, carrying a significant share of global seaborne oil exports. Any disruption to traffic through the narrow channel has the potential to affect fuel prices and international commerce worldwide.
The proposed agreement is being viewed by many countries as a significant diplomatic breakthrough that could help stabilise energy markets and reduce the risk of a wider regional conflict in the Middle East.
