European Leaders Welcome US-Iran Breakthrough, Signal Readiness for Sanctions Relief

London, June 2026 : The leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy have welcomed the announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, describing it as a significant diplomatic breakthrough with the potential to enhance regional stability and strengthen the global economy.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday, the four European nations congratulated the governments of the United States and Iran, as well as all parties that played a role in facilitating the agreement.

“We warmly welcome the announcement of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran,” the leaders said. “We congratulate the United States, the Iranian government and all those involved, including Pakistan, Qatar and all other mediators, on this diplomatic breakthrough.”

The leaders hailed the development as a major opportunity to reduce tensions in the Middle East, a region that has witnessed months of conflict and uncertainty affecting global energy markets.

Describing the agreement as “a moment of opportunity to restore regional stability and stabilise the global economy,” the statement stressed that the next phase of negotiations would be crucial.

The four countries urged all sides to quickly conclude detailed discussions and implement the agreement in full.

“It is now vital that the detailed negotiations are concluded and this agreement is implemented rapidly and comprehensively. We are ready to support that effort,” the leaders stated.

A key focus of the European statement was the security of maritime trade routes in the Gulf. The leaders called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways for oil and commercial shipping.

“The urgent re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation is essential,” the statement said.

The European powers also pledged support for ensuring maritime safety, including participation in defensive missions aimed at reassuring commercial shipping and assisting in mine-clearance operations if necessary.

The joint statement reaffirmed the longstanding European position that Iran should never acquire nuclear weapons.

“Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon,” the leaders declared, while expressing readiness to work closely with the United States, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure compliance with nuclear commitments.

Importantly, the four nations signalled that sanctions relief could be considered if Tehran takes concrete steps to address international concerns.

They said they were prepared to ease relevant sanctions in response to “clear, verifiable steps” taken by Iran regarding its nuclear programme.

The leaders also pledged to maintain intensive diplomatic engagement with regional stakeholders to secure a lasting settlement and reduce the risk of future conflict.

In addition, they reaffirmed their “full support to the stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon” and underscored the importance of maintaining a robust ceasefire in the region.

The statement reflects growing international support for diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East and restoring stability to global trade and energy markets.
