PM Modi Welcomes US-Iran Understanding, Hopes for Peace and Stability in West Asia

Bratislava, June 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the conflict in West Asia, expressing hope that the agreement would help restore peace, stability and the smooth flow of global commerce through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced what he described as a major breakthrough between Washington and Tehran following months of heightened tensions that had disrupted global energy markets and raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi underlined the global impact of the conflict and stressed the importance of ensuring stability in the region.

“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” the Prime Minister wrote.

He further expressed India’s hope that the agreement would pave the way for lasting peace and guarantee the free movement of commercial shipping in the region.

“India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce. We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” PM Modi added.

The development is being closely watched across the world, particularly by energy-importing nations such as India, which relies heavily on crude oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The narrow waterway serves as one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

Announcing the agreement, US President Donald Trump claimed that the deal would result in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade imposed during the conflict.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

Describing the agreement as a landmark diplomatic achievement, Trump said it would bring peace and security to the region.

“This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region,” he said, adding that previous US administrations had failed to secure such an understanding with Iran.

The US President also indicated that the formal signing of the agreement is expected later this week and linked the reopening of the Strait to efforts aimed at removing mines from the waterway.

“With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!” Trump stated.

While no official text of the agreement has yet been released, analysts believe its immediate focus is on restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and easing disruptions to international shipping.

Broader issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and US sanctions, are expected to be addressed in subsequent negotiations as both sides work toward a comprehensive and lasting settlement.
