Trump Announces US-Iran Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz, End Naval Blockade

Washington, June 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced what he described as a landmark agreement between the United States and Iran that would reopen the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz and bring an end to the US naval blockade imposed during months of regional tensions.

The announcement marks a potentially significant turning point in US-Iran relations after a prolonged period of conflict that disrupted global energy markets and heightened fears of a broader regional confrontation.

In a post on social media, Trump declared that the agreement had been finalised.

“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!” he wrote.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, is among the world’s most important energy corridors. A substantial share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passes through the strait, making stability in the region critical for international markets.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran in recent months had led to disruptions in maritime trade and contributed to fluctuations in global oil prices.

Announcing a major shift in policy, Trump said he had authorised the reopening of the strait and ordered the lifting of the US naval blockade.

“I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” Trump stated.

In a message aimed at global shipping and energy markets, he added: “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

The President portrayed the agreement as a major diplomatic success and a step towards broader regional stability.

“This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region,” Trump wrote in a separate post.

Claiming that previous administrations had failed to achieve lasting peace with Tehran, he said: “Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me.”

Trump further argued that leaders in the region had found a partner in Washington capable of advancing peace efforts.

“The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace,” he added.

According to Trump, the agreement is expected to be formally signed on Friday. He linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to ongoing efforts to clear mines and restore safe navigation in the area.

“With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!” he said.

Despite the announcement, details of the accord remain limited. The White House had not immediately released the official text of the agreement, and Trump did not elaborate on several long-standing issues that have defined US-Iran relations, including Iran’s nuclear programme and American sanctions.

However, his statements suggested that the immediate objective of the agreement is to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and facilitate the resumption of commercial shipping.

The announcement followed intensive diplomatic activity involving regional mediators and negotiations between US and Iranian officials over recent weeks.

International media reports indicated that both sides had moved closer to an understanding aimed at ending hostilities and creating space for broader negotiations in the future. Reports suggested that while reopening the Strait and lifting the blockade form the core of the agreement, more contentious issues—including nuclear talks and sanctions relief—may be addressed in subsequent phases.

If implemented successfully, the agreement could have far-reaching implications for regional security, global energy markets and future US-Iran engagement, while potentially reducing tensions in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
