UN Welcomes US-Iran Peace Deal, Calls It a Crucial Step Towards Regional Stability
United Nations, June 2026 : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the announcement of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step towards ending hostilities and promoting stability in the region.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief praised the agreement, which provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework for continued negotiations between the two countries.
“This represents a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict,” Dujarric said on behalf of the Secretary-General.
The statement highlighted the significance of the breakthrough after months of heightened tensions that had threatened regional security and disrupted global energy markets.
The UN also expressed appreciation for the diplomatic efforts of several countries that played a role in facilitating the negotiations. According to the statement, Guterres conveyed his gratitude to Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and other regional partners for their constructive contributions to the peace process.
“The Secretary-General hopes that the parties will build on this new momentum and redouble their efforts towards a final resolution of the conflict,” the statement said.
The UN chief reaffirmed the organisation’s readiness to assist both sides in advancing the peace process.
“The Secretary-General reaffirms that the United Nations stands ready to support the parties in achieving a durable and comprehensive peace,” it added.
The UN’s response came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran had finalised an agreement aimed at ending months of confrontation in the Gulf region.
In a social media post, Trump declared: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!”
The agreement is expected to result in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes. Disruptions in the waterway over recent months had contributed to volatility in international energy markets and raised concerns over a wider regional conflict.
Trump also announced the lifting of the US naval blockade that had been imposed during the conflict.
“I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” he wrote.
The peace deal is being viewed as a major diplomatic development with potentially far-reaching implications for regional security, global trade and energy supplies. While details of the agreement have not yet been made public, international observers see it as an opportunity to reduce tensions and create conditions for broader negotiations on unresolved issues between Washington and Tehran.
The coming days are expected to reveal more details about the agreement and its implementation as the international community closely monitors developments in the region.
