Sciver-Brunt’s Historic Century Powers Mumbai Indians to Crucial Win Over RCB in WPL 2026

Vadodara, Jan 2026 : In a high-intensity clash of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, the Mumbai Indians (MI) returned to winning ways with a vital 15-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday, snapping a three-match losing streak and significantly boosting their playoff hopes. The win was built on a stunning unbeaten century by Nat Sciver-Brunt, a fluent half-century from Hayley Matthews, and a disciplined all-round bowling performance that held firm under pressure.

The result lifted MI from fourth to second place in the points table, giving their campaign fresh momentum at a crucial stage of the league. For RCB, however, it marked a second straight defeat following an impressive five-match winning run, slightly denting their otherwise strong season.

After winning the toss, RCB opted to field, hoping to exploit early movement. MI suffered an early blow in the third over when Sajana Sajeevan was dismissed cheaply, but what followed completely changed the complexion of the innings. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews came together and unleashed a calculated yet destructive counter-attack, particularly during the middle overs, taking the game away from the RCB bowlers.

Both batters reached their half-centuries and stitched together a superb 131-run partnership for the second wicket off just 73 balls. Matthews was aggressive from the outset, using her timing and power to pierce the field, while Sciver-Brunt anchored the innings with composure before accelerating with authority. Matthews eventually departed for a well-made 56, attempting a cross-batted shot off Lauren Bell, but by then MI were firmly on course for a daunting total.

Following Matthews’ dismissal, MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur joined Sciver-Brunt, and the pair added a brisk 42 runs off 25 balls for the third wicket. Sciver-Brunt continued to dominate, finding boundaries with ease and rotating the strike smartly. In the final over, she reached her unbeaten 100, her first T20 century and a historic one, as she became the first player to score a century in the history of the WPL. MI finished with an imposing 199 for 4, setting RCB a challenging target of 200.

Chasing the big total, RCB aimed for an aggressive start but ran into immediate trouble. Shabnim Ismail struck in the third over, removing Grace Harris, and in the very next over, Hayley Matthews delivered a double blow by dismissing Smriti Mandhana and Georgia Wareham. Ismail returned to bowl Gautami Naik, while Matthews picked up Radha Yadav in the final over of the powerplay, leaving RCB reeling at five wickets down inside the first six overs.

With half the side back in the pavilion, the responsibility fell squarely on Richa Ghosh and Nadine de Klerk. The duo counter-attacked bravely, refusing to surrender without a fight. De Klerk contributed a quick 28 off 20 balls before being dismissed by Amelia Kerr, but Ghosh continued to bat with remarkable intent and fearlessness.

Ghosh then formed a crucial partnership with Arundhati Reddy, keeping RCB in contention despite the steadily climbing required run rate. However, Amanjot Kaur struck at a key moment, taking a sharp return catch to dismiss Reddy and leave RCB seven down, with the asking rate soaring beyond 22 runs per over.

Undeterred, Ghosh brought up a magnificent half-century, fighting a lone battle for her team. The drama peaked in the final overs. RCB needed 59 runs from the last two overs, and Ghosh ignited hope by smashing three consecutive sixes off Amanjot in the 19th over. Two boundaries from Shreyanka Patil reduced the equation to 32 runs in the final over.

Ghosh refused to give up, striking a four and two towering sixes in the last over, but MI held their nerve. On the final ball, Ghosh was dismissed for a heroic 90, and with that, MI sealed a memorable 15-run victory.

MI 199/4 (Sciver-Brunt 100, Matthews 56; Bell 2/21) defeated RCB 184/9 (Ghosh 90, de Klerk 28; Matthews 3/10) by 15 runs*, in a match that showcased resilience, individual brilliance, and the growing intensity of the WPL 2026 season.

Team Maverick.
