BJP Urges Vijay’s TVK to Join AIADMK-Led NDA Ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls
Chennai, March 2026 : With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections expected to be announced soon, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called on actor-turned-politician Vijay to consider aligning his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The appeal comes amid concerns that a fragmented opposition could split anti-incumbency votes and indirectly benefit the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
In a statement issued on Saturday, Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson A. N. S. Prasad said the political environment in the state is undergoing rapid changes as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the crucial electoral contest. He claimed that the DMK government, led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, is facing growing dissatisfaction among sections of the public over several governance issues.
According to Prasad, the ruling party is attempting to strengthen its electoral prospects by expanding its alliance network. He alleged that the DMK leadership has been reaching out to several smaller political parties and social organisations to broaden its coalition before the elections. In his view, these efforts indicate concern within the ruling party about its electoral performance and the possibility of a strong challenge from opposition forces.
The BJP spokesperson also pointed to recent developments within the DMK-led alliance, particularly the reported allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat to the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). Prasad claimed that the decision has created dissatisfaction among some long-time alliance partners, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Left parties that have traditionally been part of the DMK coalition.
Highlighting what he described as public concerns, Prasad said voters in the state are increasingly expressing dissatisfaction over issues such as law and order, rising prices and allegations of corruption. He argued that these factors could significantly influence voter sentiment when the state goes to the polls next year.
Against this backdrop, the BJP leader stressed the need for opposition parties to work together. According to him, the primary objective for parties opposing the DMK should be to prevent a division of votes that could weaken the overall challenge to the ruling coalition.
Prasad specifically addressed Vijay, whose party TVK has recently begun preparations to enter active electoral politics. He said that if Vijay’s stated goal is to prevent the DMK from returning to power, then joining a broader opposition platform could help consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment. Aligning with the AIADMK-BJP-led NDA, he argued, would provide a stronger and more coordinated challenge in the upcoming elections.
He warned that if multiple opposition parties contest separately, it could lead to a split in votes among those seeking political change, which might ultimately benefit the ruling DMK alliance. Therefore, he urged Vijay to carefully evaluate the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, including historical electoral trends and alliance dynamics, before deciding on his party’s future course.
Prasad concluded by saying that the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election will be a decisive moment for the state’s political future. He called on all parties opposing the DMK government to come together and work towards what he described as a “united democratic alternative” capable of presenting voters with a strong and credible option in the forthcoming polls.
