George Russell Wins Australian Grand Prix as Mercedes Outplays Ferrari with Smart Strategy
Melbourne, March 2026 : George Russell delivered a strong performance to win the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, leading a memorable result for Mercedes‑AMG Petronas Formula One Team as his teammate Kimi Antonelli finished close behind. A perfectly timed double-stack pit stop during a Virtual Safety Car period helped Mercedes turn the race in their favour and overcome the early challenge from Scuderia Ferrari.
The result marked an impressive one-two finish for Mercedes at the iconic Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. For Russell, it was a satisfying victory after a tense race that began with a difficult start from pole position.
Speaking after the race, Russell admitted the opening laps were far from ideal. The British driver said he struggled off the line and found himself immediately under pressure from Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.
“We knew it was going to be a tough race,” Russell said. “When I lined up on the grid I checked my battery level and realised I didn’t have much available. I didn’t get a great start and had a pretty intense battle with Charles in the early laps.”
Despite the shaky beginning, Russell managed to hold his composure and remain in contention near the front of the field. The turning point came on lap 12 when the race was neutralised by a Virtual Safety Car after a problem for Isack Hadjar of Red Bull Racing, whose car stopped on track.
Mercedes quickly reacted by bringing both Russell and Antonelli into the pits in quick succession — a double-stack stop that allowed them to change tyres while the rest of the field was circulating at reduced speed. This smart strategy proved decisive, enabling the Mercedes drivers to leapfrog their rivals and gain track position.
Antonelli, who had dropped as low as seventh place during the chaotic opening laps, benefited greatly from the strategy and managed to climb back up the order. The young driver eventually crossed the finish line right behind Russell to secure a strong result for the team.
Reflecting on the race, Antonelli said the opening laps were among the most exciting moments of the event.
“The racing was really intense at the start,” he said. “There were lots of overtakes and plenty of action. It was great fun battling with the others early on. Now I’m just looking forward to a bit of rest before the next race in China.”
Ferrari driver Leclerc finished third, giving the Italian team its first podium since the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix. While the result was respectable, the 28-year-old admitted he was disappointed not to finish higher, especially after making such a strong start.
Leclerc had taken advantage of his car’s quick turbo response to jump ahead at the first corner and briefly challenge Russell for the lead. The two drivers exchanged positions during the opening phase of the race before the pit-stop strategy ultimately shifted the balance.
Ferrari chose not to pit during the Virtual Safety Car period, a decision that later proved costly as Mercedes gained valuable time by stopping under the slower race conditions.
Even so, Leclerc acknowledged that Mercedes appeared to have slightly better pace during the race.
“It felt like Mercedes had a bit more speed than us today,” he said. “Maybe not as much as we saw yesterday in qualifying, but still enough to make a difference. I’m not sure we could have won, but perhaps we could have finished one place higher.”
Leclerc’s teammate Lewis Hamilton finished just behind him in fourth place. The seven-time world champion pushed hard in the closing laps and finished only 0.6 seconds behind Leclerc. Hamilton was heard expressing frustration over Ferrari’s strategy decisions during team radio conversations late in the race.
The race also brought disappointment for local fans in Australia. Oscar Piastri of McLaren Formula One Team crashed while heading to the grid before the race start, apparently due to an energy spike in his power unit. The incident forced the Australian driver to retire before the race had even begun, leaving the home crowd disappointed.
With Piastri out, McLaren’s hopes rested solely on Lando Norris. The defending world champion fought back strongly after a slow start that dropped him outside the top ten. Norris recovered well during the race and eventually secured a top-five finish after an intense battle in the closing stages.
Further back, Max Verstappen of Red Bull produced one of the standout drives of the day. Starting from 20th on the grid, the Dutch driver fought his way through the field to finish sixth after 58 laps of racing. He was the last driver to finish on the lead lap, though he ended the race more than 54 seconds behind winner Russell.
Another impressive performance came from Oliver Bearman of Haas F1 Team, who climbed from 12th on the grid to finish seventh, earning valuable points for his team. His teammate Esteban Ocon narrowly missed out on points with an 11th-place finish.
One of the surprises of the race was rookie driver Arvid Lindblad, who finished eighth in his Formula One debut. The young driver even ran as high as fourth during parts of the race and collected four championship points in an impressive first outing.
With the opening race of the season now complete, Mercedes have made a strong early statement in the championship battle. Russell’s victory and Antonelli’s podium finish suggest the team could be serious contenders as the 2026 Formula One season moves on to its next round in China.
