Trump Warns Iran of ‘Immediate Elimination’ as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate
Washington, April 2026 : Donald Trump on Monday issued a stern warning to Iran, declaring that any naval vessels approaching American ships enforcing a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz would be “immediately eliminated,” as tensions sharply escalated following the collapse of recent peace negotiations.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that Iran’s naval strength had been significantly weakened due to recent military actions. “Iran’s Navy is lying at the bottom of the sea, completely obliterated — 158 ships,” he wrote, while acknowledging that Tehran still possesses a limited number of smaller, fast-moving vessels.
He noted that these “fast attack ships” had not been targeted earlier as they were not seen as a major threat. However, Trump made it clear that any attempt by these vessels to challenge the ongoing blockade would be met with swift and decisive force.
“Warning: If any of these ships come anywhere close to our blockade, they will be immediately eliminated,” he said, adding that the response would be “quick and brutal,” similar to tactics used against maritime drug trafficking operations.
The remarks come as the United States formally began enforcing a sweeping naval blockade targeting Iranian ports and maritime access points. The blockade, which took effect at 10 a.m. Eastern Time (7:30 p.m. IST), marks a significant escalation in Washington’s strategy following the breakdown of diplomatic talks with Tehran over the weekend.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the blockade applies to vessels of all nations that engage with Iranian ports or coastal infrastructure. Ships that fail to comply with directives may face interception, diversion, or even capture by US forces operating in the region.
Iran has strongly condemned the move, describing it as an act of “maritime piracy” and warning of serious consequences. Iranian officials have indicated that any threat to their ports or territorial waters would trigger a firm response, raising fears of renewed confrontation.
Tehran has also warned that instability could spread across the broader Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, suggesting that no port in the region would remain secure if Iranian interests are targeted.
The situation remains highly volatile, with the fragile ceasefire between the two sides now under strain. Analysts warn that continued escalation could disrupt global shipping routes and energy supplies, given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a key transit corridor for oil and gas shipments worldwide.
