Israel, Lebanon Set for Second Round of Talks in Washington Amid Fragile Ceasefire

Washington, April 2026 : Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold a second round of ambassador-level talks at the US State Department, even as tensions persist along their volatile border despite an ongoing ceasefire. According to US media reports, the discussions will once again see Israel represented by its ambassador Yechiel Leiter and Lebanon by Nada Hamadeh Moawad.

The diplomatic engagement comes in the backdrop of a US-backed 10-day ceasefire that came into effect at midnight between Thursday and Friday, following weeks of intense cross-border hostilities. The escalation had been linked to the broader conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, further complicating the regional security landscape.

However, the ceasefire remains fragile, with repeated violations reported from both sides. Lebanon’s National News Agency stated that Israeli forces intensified operations in southern Lebanon early Tuesday, carrying out demolitions, increasing aerial surveillance, and issuing evacuation warnings in certain areas despite the truce being in place.

Israel and Lebanon do not share formal diplomatic relations, and talks are being conducted through official state representatives rather than non-state actors. While Israel considers Hezbollah a proxy of Iran, it is the Lebanese government that is participating in the negotiations.

On the ground, tensions escalated further when Hezbollah claimed responsibility for launching rockets and attack drones at an Israeli artillery position in Kfar Giladi. The group described the strike as retaliation for what it alleged were repeated Israeli violations of the ceasefire, including attacks on civilians and destruction of property in southern Lebanon.

The incident underscores the delicate nature of the truce, with both sides accusing each other of breaching its terms. Observers note that while diplomatic channels remain open, the situation on the ground continues to be unpredictable and volatile.

The upcoming talks in Washington are seen as a crucial attempt to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation. However, with ongoing hostilities and deep-rooted mistrust, achieving a lasting resolution remains a significant challenge.
