Australia Beat Turkey 2-0 to Spoil World Cup Return After 24 Years

Santa Clara, June 2026 : Australia made a winning start to their FIFA World Cup campaign with a clinical 2-0 victory over Turkey in their Group D opener on Saturday, dampening the latter’s long-awaited return to the tournament after 24 years.

Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, combined with a disciplined defensive display, helped the Socceroos secure all three points in a match where they made the most of limited opportunities. Turkey, despite dominating possession and creating several chances, failed to break through Australia’s resilient backline.

Turkey returned to the World Cup for the first time since their memorable third-place finish in 2002 and entered the tournament with high expectations. Much of their creative responsibility rested on 21-year-old playmaker Arda Guler, who looked lively from the outset.

Guler had Turkey’s first chance in the seventh minute, but his effort sailed over the crossbar. The European side continued to press forward, and in the 27th minute, Guler nearly opened the scoring with a superb volley, only for Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach to pull off an excellent save.

Despite Turkey’s dominance, Australia remained patient and stuck to their tactical plan. Their breakthrough came when Nestory Irankunda capitalised on a pass from Paul Okon-Engstler. The young forward cut in sharply from the left flank, beat goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, and calmly slotted the ball into the net to give Australia the lead.

The goal boosted Australia’s confidence as they tightened their grip on the contest. Connor Metcalfe then doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish, putting the Socceroos firmly in control.

Turkey continued to push for a comeback in the second half, launching wave after wave of attacks. However, Australia’s organised defence stood tall, frustrating their opponents and denying them clear scoring opportunities.

As the clock ticked down, Turkey’s hopes of marking their World Cup return with a positive result gradually faded. Australia, meanwhile, showcased their ability to defend resolutely and punish opponents with efficient finishing.

The victory gives Australia a strong start in Group D and strengthens their chances of progressing to the knockout stages. For Turkey, the defeat serves as an early setback in their first World Cup appearance in more than two decades.

While Turkey still have opportunities to revive their campaign in the remaining group-stage matches, Australia’s composed and effective performance underlined why they remain a formidable force on the global stage.
