Netanyahu Says Israel Defends Christian Rights Amid Regional Tensions

Jerusalem, April 2026: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday asserted that Israel is actively defending the rights of Christians across the Middle East, countering what he described as misleading narratives circulating internationally. His remarks came in a video message released by the Prime Minister’s Office, where he was seen addressing a group of soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Standing alongside what he called an “exceptional group” of young servicemen and women, Netanyahu praised their dedication, sacrifice, and achievements. He emphasized that Israel’s armed forces include Christian soldiers who play a vital role in defending the country and supporting Christian communities in the region.

“It is completely contrary to what is being portrayed outside,” Netanyahu said, stressing that Israel not only safeguards Christian rights but also fosters their participation within its military and society. He added that Israel remains unique in the Middle East as a country where the Christian population is “thriving, growing, and expanding.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the success and contributions of Christians in Israel, describing them as an integral part of the nation’s social fabric. He noted that their continued growth and prosperity stand as evidence of the country’s commitment to religious tolerance and coexistence.

Netanyahu’s remarks follow a recent controversy that drew widespread attention. On April 20, he strongly condemned an incident in which an Israeli soldier was seen damaging a statue of Jesus Christ in Lebanon. The image, which went viral on social media, showed the soldier using a sledgehammer to destroy the statue, sparking outrage among Christian communities.

Expressing that he was “stunned and saddened” by the act, Netanyahu assured that Israeli military authorities had launched a criminal investigation into the matter. He said strict disciplinary action would be taken against those responsible, underscoring that such behavior does not reflect the values of the Israeli military or the nation.

The Israel Defense Forces had earlier stated that the incident was being treated with utmost seriousness. The IDF’s Northern Command initiated a probe, describing the soldier’s conduct as inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of its personnel.

Reaffirming Israel’s commitment to pluralism, Netanyahu said the country upholds values of mutual respect among people of all faiths. He stressed that acts of intolerance or disrespect toward religious symbols would not be tolerated and would be addressed firmly.

The statement comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over regional conflicts and religious sensitivities. By reiterating Israel’s stance on protecting minority rights, particularly those of Christians, Netanyahu sought to project a message of inclusivity while addressing criticism arising from recent events.
