White House Defends Secret Service Response After Attempted Attack on Trump

Washington, April 2026 : The White House on Monday strongly defended the response of the United States Secret Service following an attempted attack on US President Donald Trump, asserting that security systems functioned effectively and the suspect was swiftly neutralised.

Addressing reporters, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the President remains confident in the Secret Service and its protocols, even as the administration prepares to review procedures ahead of future high-profile events. “The President believes that the protocols worked,” she stated, emphasizing that the situation was handled with speed and precision.

The incident occurred during the prestigious White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, one of the most prominent gatherings in Washington that brings together journalists, political leaders, and senior officials. According to Leavitt, the suspected attacker attempted to breach the security perimeter established at the venue but was stopped within moments.

Describing the sequence of events, Leavitt—who was present at the dinner—said the response unfolded in a matter of seconds. “It was seconds before we were told to get down, and moments later we were moved to a secure holding area backstage,” she recalled. She noted that the President, Vice President, and First Lady were immediately escorted to safety, underscoring the effectiveness of the protective measures in place.

Leavitt praised the coordination among security personnel, stating that agents acted decisively under pressure. “The Secret Service did their jobs well. Their communication and rapid response ensured that top leadership was removed from any potential danger as quickly as possible,” she said.

While defending the response, the White House also acknowledged that a comprehensive review of the incident is underway. Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is expected to convene a meeting with senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service to assess the situation and identify areas for improvement.

Leavitt indicated that while the existing system performed as intended, enhancements to security protocols remain a possibility. “We are always looking for ways to improve. Changes are not out of the question,” she said, adding that safeguarding the President remains the administration’s top priority.

However, she made it clear that specific operational details would not be disclosed publicly due to security concerns. “The Secret Service does not share its procedures or operational specifics, for obvious reasons,” she noted, warning that such disclosures could be exploited.

The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of large-scale events involving senior government officials, particularly those held outside highly secured locations like the White House complex. Despite this, Leavitt reassured the public, highlighting that the swift evacuation of key leaders demonstrated the system’s reliability.

“As we all witnessed, within minutes the President, the First Lady, the Vice President, and Cabinet members were safely escorted out,” she said, adding that the attacker was stopped at the perimeter before causing further harm.

With multiple high-profile events scheduled in the coming months, the administration is expected to tighten coordination among federal agencies to further strengthen security measures.
