UP expressways being equipped with AI and Swiss technology, Yogi govt building a ‘Smart Road Network’
Sensor-based scanning and AI cameras to usher in a new era of safe and comfortable travel
Focus on safety and quality along with speed, real-time monitoring to transform road construction patterns
This technology has also been used in the Ganga Expressway inaugurated by PM Modi
Lucknow, May 2026 : The model of expressway construction in Uttar Pradesh has now moved beyond the traditional framework and entered an era of technology-driven monitoring and management.
During the second term of the Yogi government, while the expressway network has expanded rapidly, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Swiss sensor technology are now being placed at the core of ensuring the quality, safety, and long-term durability of these projects.
The partnership between the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and Switzerland’s ETH Zurich and RTDT Laboratories AG is part of this broader strategy aimed at making road construction data-driven and based on real-time monitoring. This technology has also been used in the Ganga Expressway inaugurated by PM Modi.
Until now, the quality assessment of roads was generally conducted after the completion of construction, often increasing both the time and cost involved in rectifying defects.
The new system has completely transformed this process. Through sensor-based modules, continuous monitoring of road quality is being carried out during construction itself, enabling any shortcomings to be corrected immediately.
The most significant aspect of this technology is a specially equipped vehicle fitted with seven accelerometer sensors.
This vehicle travels across every lane of the expressway, collecting data on surface uniformity, elevation variations, and vibrations.
The data provides a scientific assessment of the actual condition of the road, which is considered far more accurate than traditional visual inspections.
The data obtained from the sensors is processed through AI software, which categorizes road quality into classifications such as ‘Excellent,’ ‘Good,’ and ‘Poor.’ This not only enables objective quality evaluation but also ensures accountability of the construction agencies.
A key feature of this AI-based system is its ability to detect even the smallest defects in the road, allowing timely corrective measures.
The Yogi government’s focus is not limited to construction alone. AI is also being extensively used during the operational phase of expressways.
AI-enabled cameras will automatically identify traffic violations such as overspeeding and wrong-lane driving. This will not only strengthen enforcement but also help reduce road accidents.
This initiative positions Uttar Pradesh beyond the traditional infrastructure model and firmly within the category of ‘smart infrastructure.’
Expressways are no longer just a means of connectivity, but are evolving into intelligent networks driven by the integration of data, technology, and management.
It is evident that the Yogi government has now entered the second phase of infrastructure development, where the focus is not only on construction, but also on quality, safety, and technology integration.
