Crop Diversification Transforms Farmer Kunwar Singh Madhukar’s Life
Switch from Traditional Paddy Farming to Alternative Crops Doubles and Triples Farmer’s Income, Inspiring Farmers Across the State
Raipur, May 2026 : The state government’s efforts to promote innovation and crop diversification in the agriculture sector are now showing visible results on the ground. Farmer Kunwar Singh Madhukar (Nandkumar) from Bargaon village in Pamgarh development block of Janjgir-Champa district has emerged as an inspiring example by moving beyond traditional farming and adopting a modern multi-crop model that has significantly increased his income.
Earlier dependent solely on paddy cultivation, Madhukar took a bold step in response to changing agricultural conditions and adopted crop diversification across his 18-acre farmland. He began cultivating a wide range of crops including black pepper, mango, cucumber, bottle gourd, jackfruit, lemon, apple ber, kundru and parwal. As a result, his income has increased two to three times, considerably improving his financial condition.
Today, his farm stands as an excellent example of scientific and planned farming. He has planted 250 jackfruit trees, 600 new lemon plants along with 250 older lemon plants, 100 apple ber plants, 1,700 Australian teak saplings and 300 black pepper plants. Alongside these, he is also cultivating vegetables such as kundru, parwal, cucumber, bottle gourd and ridge gourd on a large scale, ensuring a steady source of income throughout the year.
Recognising his success, the district administration has started presenting Madhukar as a model farmer. Collector Janmejay Mahobe visited his farm, appreciated his innovations and said that crop diversification not only increases farmers’ income but also makes agriculture more sustainable and profitable. He also directed officials to encourage other farmers to adopt similar farming models.
Madhukar’s success story demonstrates that if farmers move beyond traditional cultivation methods and adopt modern techniques along with diversified cropping patterns, they can achieve better earnings even with limited resources. Today, he has become a source of inspiration not only for farmers in his area but across the entire state.
