Security Tightened Across Tamil Nadu Amid Political Uncertainty After Hung Assembly Verdict

Chennai, May 2026 : Security arrangements have been intensified across Tamil Nadu following reports that central intelligence agencies alerted the state police about possible law-and-order concerns amid the ongoing political uncertainty after the 2026 Assembly election results. With government formation still unresolved, authorities have stepped up vigilance in Chennai and several sensitive districts to prevent any untoward incidents.

According to sources, intelligence agencies advised the Tamil Nadu Police to remain on high alert as political negotiations continue in the wake of a fractured mandate. The warning reportedly came after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader C. Joseph Vijay failed to immediately gather the required support to stake a stable claim to form the next government.

The 2026 Assembly election has dramatically altered Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with the newly formed TVK emerging as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly. The party secured 108 seats, a remarkable performance for a debutant political force, but still fell short of the majority mark required to form the government independently.

Amid rapidly evolving political developments, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor R.V. Arlekar at Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Wednesday evening and formally submitted his claim to form the government. Sources said Vijay presented a list of 113 supporting legislators, including 108 TVK MLAs and five Congress MLAs who extended support to the party.

However, sources familiar with the meeting indicated that the Governor informed Vijay that support from at least 118 MLAs would be necessary before he could be officially invited to form the government. The development has delayed what many TVK supporters had hoped would be a historic swearing-in ceremony for the actor-turned-politician.

The uncertainty surrounding government formation has intensified political activity across the state. TVK leaders had earlier expressed confidence that they would secure support from parties such as the PMK, Left parties, and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). However, discussions with these parties reportedly failed to produce a breakthrough, leaving TVK short of the majority needed to take power.

As negotiations stalled, speculation began to grow late on Wednesday night regarding alternative political possibilities. Reports emerged suggesting that the AIADMK could explore options to form a government with outside support from the DMK if Vijay is ultimately unable to secure the numbers required.

Political circles in Chennai remained abuzz as senior leaders from both the DMK and AIADMK reportedly held separate rounds of consultations to assess the evolving situation. However, the DMK later issued a statement clarifying that it preferred to remain in the opposition, respecting what it described as the people’s mandate in the election.

Adding to the speculation was actor Rajinikanth’s meeting with DMK president and outgoing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The meeting triggered widespread political discussion, although neither Rajinikanth nor the DMK officially disclosed the nature of their conversation.

Meanwhile, security forces have increased deployment around key government installations, political party offices, Raj Bhavan, and other strategic locations across Tamil Nadu. Police officials are closely monitoring the situation as political negotiations continue behind closed doors.

The state now waits for further developments as parties continue discussions that could determine the next government in one of India’s most politically significant states.
