IPL 2026: Urvil Patel’s Record 13-Ball Fifty Powers CSK to Thrilling Five-Wicket Win Over LSG

Score: Lucknow Super Giants 203/8 in 20 overs lost to Chennai Super Kings 208/5 in 19.2 overs by five wickets

Chennai, May 2026 : A sensational innings from young batter Urvil Patel lit up the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday as Chennai Super Kings defeated Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets in a high-scoring thriller in the Indian Premier League 2026.

In front of a roaring Chepauk crowd, Urvil Patel produced one of the most explosive knocks in IPL history, smashing a breathtaking 65 off just 23 deliveries and equalling the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history by reaching the milestone in only 13 balls. His extraordinary innings helped CSK chase down a daunting target of 204 with four balls to spare and register their third consecutive victory of the season.

The win also marked a significant milestone for CSK, as it was the first time since 2019 that they had successfully chased a target above 180 runs. The victory lifted Chennai to fifth place in the IPL 2026 points table while leaving LSG on the brink of elimination from the tournament.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Lucknow Super Giants got off to a flying start courtesy of a blazing innings from Josh Inglis, who hammered 85 runs and led LSG’s aggressive charge during the powerplay.

LSG raced to 91 runs in the first six overs, setting a new benchmark at Chepauk at that stage of the innings. Inglis dominated the CSK bowlers with fearless strokeplay, while the visitors appeared headed for an even bigger total.

However, Chennai staged a strong comeback in the middle overs through disciplined bowling led by Jamie Overton, who picked up 3 wickets for 36 runs. Young pacer Anshul Kamboj also chipped in with two wickets despite proving slightly expensive.

The CSK bowlers managed to slow the scoring rate after the explosive powerplay and restricted LSG to 203/8 in their 20 overs — a competitive but chaseable total on a batting-friendly surface.

Chennai’s run chase began aggressively as skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson attacked from the outset. The pair struck boundaries regularly and ensured the required run rate never became a concern in the opening overs.

But the match changed dramatically after Samson was dismissed by spinner Digvesh Rathi while attempting an ambitious pull shot. That dismissal brought Urvil Patel to the crease — and what followed left the Chepauk crowd in absolute disbelief.

From the very first ball, Urvil launched a fearless assault on the LSG bowling attack. He picked lengths early, cleared boundaries effortlessly, and completely shifted the momentum of the game within minutes.

The young batter targeted experienced pacer Avesh Khan first, smashing him for three sixes in a single over. He then dismantled spinner Digvesh Rathi with three towering maximums and a boundary in another devastating over.

The crowd erupted when Urvil smashed Mohammed Shami over long-on for his seventh six to move to 48 runs off just 11 deliveries. After taking a single on the following ball, he completed his maiden IPL fifty in only 13 balls, equalling Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest fifty in IPL history set in 2023.

As chants of “Urvil! Urvil!” echoed around Chepauk, the batter produced an emotional moment by pulling out a note from his pocket that read, “This is for you, Dad,” accompanied by a few lines written in Gujarati.

His explosive innings included eight sixes and two boundaries at a staggering strike rate of 282.61. Urvil’s assault also helped CSK score 97/1 in the powerplay, surpassing the very record LSG had set earlier in the evening.

Although Urvil was eventually dismissed by Shahbaz Ahmed in the tenth over through a slower delivery, he had already tilted the game heavily in Chennai’s favour.

Still, the match was far from over.

Lucknow fought back brilliantly through Shahbaz Ahmed and Digvesh Rathi, who removed Gaikwad and Dewald Brevis in quick succession. CSK then lost Kartik Sharma after he contributed a useful 20 runs, and suddenly the pressure returned with the hosts at 169/5 in the 17th over.

With the required rate climbing and tension rising inside the stadium, young batter Prashant Veer played a crucial supporting role. Despite being dropped twice by Rathi and Nicholas Pooran, Veer capitalised on the reprieves and struck important boundaries at the death.

He smashed a six off Prince Yadav before adding another maximum against Avesh Khan to ease the pressure. Alongside him, Shivam Dube remained calm and composed.

Needing 10 runs in the final over bowled by Aiden Markram, CSK received two wides before Dube sealed the thrilling victory in style by smashing consecutive sixes.

The win sparked celebrations across Chepauk as CSK strengthened their playoff hopes with yet another dramatic chase in front of their home fans.

Brief Scores:
Lucknow Super Giants 203/8 in 20 overs (Josh Inglis 85, Shahbaz Ahmed 43 not out; Jamie Overton 3/36, Anshul Kamboj 2/47) lost to Chennai Super Kings 208/5 in 19.2 overs (Urvil Patel 65, Ruturaj Gaikwad 42; Shahbaz Ahmed 2/30, Digvesh Rathi 2/45) by five wickets.

Team Maverick.
