PM Modi Receives Grand Diaspora Welcome in Netherlands, Holds Key Talks to Deepen Bilateral Ties
New Delhi, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday shared glimpses of a vibrant and culturally rich welcome extended to him by the Indian diaspora in the Netherlands, highlighting the deep emotional and cultural connect between India and its overseas community.
Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister described the reception as “remarkable” and noted that it showcased India’s diverse cultural traditions through a series of classical and folk performances.
“Yesterday’s welcome by the Indian diaspora in the Netherlands was remarkable. The welcome included a dance performance covering Kathak, Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Mohiniyattam. It also included a Garba performance,” PM Modi wrote.
In a subsequent post, he shared additional visuals from the event, stating, “Sharing some more glimpses from the welcome by the Indian community in the Netherlands.”
The enthusiastic reception reflects the strong presence and growing influence of the Indian community in the country, which has emerged as one of the most important hubs of the Indian diaspora in mainland Europe.
During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and also meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. These high-level engagements are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, technology, clean energy, water management, and strategic sectors such as semiconductors and defence.
The Prime Minister is also expected to interact with leading business leaders and members of the Indian community during his stay, further strengthening economic and people-to-people linkages between the two countries.
PM Modi arrived in the Netherlands on Friday evening as part of his broader multi-nation diplomatic tour aimed at deepening India’s strategic and economic partnerships across Europe. This marks his second visit to the country, after his earlier trip in 2017.
Announcing his arrival, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X, saying: “Goedeavond Nederland! PM @narendramodi has arrived in the Netherlands. The visit will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the multifaceted India–Netherlands partnership and to engage with the largest Indian diaspora on mainland Europe.”
Earlier, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Sibi George underlined the expanding scope of India-Netherlands relations. He noted that cooperation between the two countries has grown significantly in recent years across traditional sectors such as trade, investment, water, agriculture, and health, as well as emerging areas like technology, innovation, defence, security, renewable energy, semiconductors, education, and maritime affairs.
“The partnership has considerably deepened over the last few years,” George said, highlighting that both countries have steadily broadened their engagement into strategic and future-oriented domains.
People-to-people ties remain a strong pillar of the bilateral relationship. The Netherlands hosts more than 90,000 Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin, along with over 200,000 members of the Suriname Hindustani community. In addition, approximately 3,500 Indian students are currently pursuing higher education in Dutch universities, contributing to academic and cultural exchange.
Officials said the ongoing visit carries a comprehensive and forward-looking agenda aimed at consolidating the evolving strategic partnership. With growing convergence in areas such as climate action, digital innovation, green energy, and global supply chains, both sides are expected to further elevate cooperation.
The visit is widely seen as an important step in strengthening India’s engagement with key European partners and reinforcing its global diplomatic outreach, while also deepening its connection with the Indian diaspora, which continues to play a vital role in enhancing bilateral relations.
