Rubio’s Kolkata Visit Highlights Shared Values in India–US Partnership; Quad, PM Modi Meeting on Agenda

New Delhi, May 2026 : US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has begun his four-day official visit to India with a symbolic start in Kolkata, where he also visited the Missionaries of Charity, underscoring what US officials described as the humanitarian and value-based dimension of India–US relations.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who accompanied Rubio during parts of the visit, said the engagement at the Missionaries of Charity reflected the deeper foundation of bilateral ties. Taking to social media platform X, Gor said such moments serve as a reminder that the India–US partnership is not only anchored in policy cooperation but also in shared values and a spirit of selfless service that transcends borders.

“Visited the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata with Secretary Marco Rubio. Moments like these remind us that the US–India partnership is built not only on strong policies, but also on shared values and a spirit of selfless service that goes beyond borders,” Gor posted.

Rubio’s arrival in Kolkata on Saturday morning marks the beginning of his first visit to India since taking office as US Secretary of State last year. He was received by senior officials upon landing and is scheduled to travel to several Indian cities, including Agra and Jaipur, during the course of his visit.

The visit comes at a time when Washington and New Delhi are actively working to expand cooperation across strategic, economic and geopolitical domains amid shifting global dynamics. According to diplomatic sources, Rubio is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi later in the day, signalling the importance both governments attach to the engagement.

Ambassador Sergio Gor, in another post on X, welcomed Rubio’s arrival, calling the visit an important step forward in strengthening bilateral relations and advancing the broader Indo-Pacific agenda.

“Honoured to welcome my friend Secretary Rubio to India. We have an ambitious agenda ahead, including the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, focused on advancing the President’s vision for an even stronger US–India partnership. Looking forward to meaningful conversations and real progress,” he wrote.

During his visit, Rubio is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday. These discussions are expected to cover a wide range of issues, including defence cooperation, trade and investment, energy security, technology collaboration, and regional stability.

A key highlight of the visit will be the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday in New Delhi. The meeting will bring together foreign ministers from India, the United States, Australia and Japan. India will host the high-level dialogue on May 26, with participation from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Officials indicated that the Quad discussions will focus heavily on the Indo-Pacific region, with emphasis on ensuring a free, open and stable maritime order. Strengthening defence cooperation, improving supply chain resilience, boosting trade ties, and addressing energy security concerns are also expected to dominate the agenda.

Rubio, before departing for India, had described the country as a “great ally” and “great partner,” highlighting the importance of expanding cooperation through the Quad framework. His remarks reflected Washington’s intent to deepen engagement with New Delhi at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

The visit also includes stops in Agra and Jaipur, reflecting the broader diplomatic outreach beyond the capital. Officials say the trip is expected to reinforce the growing strategic convergence between the two countries across multiple sectors.
