Rubio Meets PM Modi, Extends Trump’s White House Invitation as India-US Partnership Enters New Strategic Phase

New Delhi, May 2026 : United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday held extensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, with both sides reviewing the rapid expansion of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and reaffirming their commitment to deeper cooperation across defence, trade, technology, energy and regional security.

The high-profile meeting took place shortly after Rubio arrived in the national capital during his first official visit to India since assuming office last year. The four-day visit is being viewed as a major diplomatic engagement aimed at further strengthening ties between the world’s two largest democracies amid evolving geopolitical and economic challenges.

During the meeting, Rubio also conveyed greetings from US President Donald Trump and formally extended an invitation for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future, underlining Washington’s emphasis on maintaining close engagement with New Delhi.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the US Secretary of State briefed Prime Minister Modi on the “sustained progress” achieved in bilateral cooperation across a broad range of sectors. These included defence collaboration, strategic and emerging technologies, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education and expanding people-to-people exchanges.

The PMO stated that the discussions also covered important regional and international developments, including the situation in West Asia and broader global security concerns.

“Secretary Rubio shared the US perspective on various regional and global issues, including the situation in West Asia. Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s consistent support for peace efforts and reiterated the call for peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy,” the statement said.

The talks reflected growing strategic alignment between India and the United States at a time when both countries are increasing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and working together on critical issues such as supply chain resilience, maritime security, defence manufacturing and emerging technologies.

Prime Minister Modi later shared details of the meeting on social media platform X, describing the interaction as productive and focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation.

“Happy to receive the US Secretary of State, Mr. Marco Rubio. We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security. India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good,” Modi posted.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who accompanied Rubio during the meeting, also highlighted the significance of the discussions and described India as a vital strategic partner for the United States.

“Great to join Secretary Rubio for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen US-India cooperation across security, trade and critical technologies — areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is a vital partner to the United States,” Gor wrote on X.

In a separate post, Gor confirmed that Rubio had formally invited Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House on behalf of President Trump.

Rubio’s India visit began earlier on Saturday in Kolkata, where he was received by Ambassador Gor and senior officials at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Accompanied by his wife Jeanette Rubio, the US Secretary of State also visited the Mother House, the global headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity established by Mother Teresa.

Ambassador Gor described the visit to the Missionaries of Charity as symbolic of the deeper values underpinning India-US relations.

“Such moments remind us that the US-India partnership is rooted not only in strong policies, but also in shared values and the spirit of selfless service that transcends borders,” Gor stated on social media.

Rubio’s visit to Kolkata also carries diplomatic and political significance, as he became the first US Secretary of State to visit the city since Hillary Clinton travelled there in 2012. The visit comes shortly after significant political developments in West Bengal, where a BJP-led government recently assumed office.

Rubio’s India itinerary, scheduled from May 23 to May 26, includes visits to Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. The trip is expected to focus heavily on strategic cooperation, energy partnerships and regional security coordination through the Quad grouping.

A major highlight of the visit will be the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to take place in New Delhi on May 26. India will host foreign ministers from the United States, Australia and Japan as part of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, which has emerged as a key strategic platform in the Indo-Pacific region.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will host the meeting, which will also be attended by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

Discussions during the Quad meeting are expected to focus on maritime security, regional stability, economic resilience, emerging technologies, supply chain diversification and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Ahead of his India visit, Rubio had emphasised the importance Washington places on strengthening energy ties with India, especially amid global energy disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and instability in West Asia.

Speaking to reporters before departing for India, Rubio said the United States was prepared to increase energy exports to India as both nations seek to expand economic cooperation.

“We want to sell them as much energy as they’ll buy,” Rubio had said, while describing India as a “great ally” and “great partner.”

He also stressed that the US and India share common strategic interests and have significant opportunities for collaboration in trade, technology, defence and infrastructure development.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that Rubio’s visit is expected to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and reinforce cooperation across multiple strategic sectors.

Diplomatic observers believe the visit reflects the growing importance of India in US foreign policy and signals continued momentum in bilateral ties as both countries seek to navigate an increasingly complex global geopolitical environment together.
