India Hosts Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Amid Focus on Indo-Pacific Security and Strategic Cooperation

New Delhi, May 2026: India will host the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, bringing together key leaders from the four-member grouping for high-level discussions on Indo-Pacific security, regional stability, economic resilience and emerging global challenges.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will welcome Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the crucial meeting under the Quad framework, which has emerged as one of the most significant strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the meeting will focus on advancing cooperation among Quad nations in areas such as maritime security, resilient supply chains, critical minerals, emerging technologies, infrastructure development, climate action and humanitarian assistance.

The MEA said the discussions would build upon deliberations held during the previous Quad meeting in Washington DC on July 1, 2025, and would review the progress achieved under various Quad initiatives.

“In keeping with the Quad vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, the Ministers will build on discussions held in Washington, DC on 1 July 2025. They will exchange views on advancing Quad cooperation across priority areas, review progress on ongoing Quad initiatives, and reflect on recent developments in the Indo-Pacific region and other international issues of mutual concern,” the official statement said.

The meeting assumes added significance amid rapidly evolving geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific, where growing strategic competition, maritime tensions and economic security concerns have prompted deeper coordination among Quad member nations.

Diplomatic sources indicated that the ministers are expected to discuss regional developments in West Asia and the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict, in addition to Indo-Pacific issues. The talks are also likely to address ways to strengthen regional connectivity, technology partnerships and supply chain resilience amid global economic uncertainties.

One of the major focus areas of the meeting will be maritime security, with Quad nations seeking greater cooperation to ensure freedom of navigation, adherence to international law and stability in key sea routes across the Indo-Pacific region.

The ministers are also expected to deliberate on cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and clean energy. Reports suggest that the Quad countries could announce new measures aimed at enhancing economic security and technological collaboration.

Apart from the Quad meeting, the visiting foreign ministers are also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar during their stay in India.

On Monday, Jaishankar held talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi ahead of the Quad meeting and reaffirmed the deep strategic partnership between India and Japan.

Addressing the media during the bilateral meeting, Jaishankar said the India-Japan relationship carried wider regional and global significance.

“Between India and Japan, of course, we have a special strategic and global partnership and that signals that our ties have a larger implication, larger importance, larger impact and one example of that will be tomorrow when we meet in the Quad format to discuss how to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Jaishankar said.

Motegi is also expected to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to New Delhi.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who arrived in India on a four-day visit, underscored the growing strategic alignment between India and the United States on several global issues, including terrorism, critical minerals and resilient supply chains.

Addressing a joint press briefing with Jaishankar earlier on Sunday, Rubio described India as “one of the most important strategic partners” of the United States and highlighted the shared democratic values between the two nations.

He noted that both countries understand the importance of accountability and public scrutiny in policymaking.

“I have to go back and justify to the American people every decision we make and the president has to do the same… and our counterparts here in India have to do the exact same thing,” Rubio said, emphasising the democratic foundations of the growing India-US partnership.

The Quad grouping — comprising India, the United States, Japan and Australia — has increasingly expanded its agenda beyond security cooperation to include economic resilience, healthcare, disaster response, technology and climate-related initiatives.

As the ministers gather in New Delhi, the meeting is expected to further reinforce the Quad’s role as a key platform for promoting a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
