India and Canada Signal Fast-Track Reset in Ties, Aim for Trade Deal by Year-End

Washington/Ottawa, May 2026 : India and Canada have signalled a rapid reset in bilateral relations, with both sides expressing strong optimism about concluding a long-pending free trade agreement by the end of this year while significantly expanding cooperation in trade, investment and strategic economic sectors.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described ongoing negotiations on a free trade agreement with India as a “game changer” for Canadian workers and businesses, highlighting the potential of access to a large and fast-growing market.

“We’re negotiating a free trade deal with India. This will be a game changer for Canadian workers and businesses — unlocking a massive new market,” Carney wrote on social media after meeting Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Ottawa on Monday (local time).

He said the two sides reviewed progress in negotiations and identified new opportunities for cooperation in key sectors, including energy, agri-food, technology and education. According to him, the engagement reflects a renewed push to strengthen economic ties after a period of diplomatic strain.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who is leading what Canadian officials described as the largest-ever Indian business delegation to Canada, conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Canadian leadership and recalled Carney’s recent visit to India, which he said had helped revive momentum in bilateral relations.

“His recent visit to India has imparted fresh momentum and renewed confidence to the India-Canada partnership,” Goyal said, adding that discussions were “forward-looking” and aimed at deepening economic engagement across multiple sectors.

He also expressed confidence that negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) could be concluded at an early date, potentially laying the foundation for a stronger long-term trade framework between the two countries.

In a joint media interaction in Ottawa, Canada’s Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu confirmed that both sides were working at an accelerated pace to finalise the agreement. He noted that two rounds of negotiations had already been completed and said Canada was keen to diversify its trade portfolio beyond traditional partners.

“We promised Canadians that we’d be moving fast,” Sidhu said, adding that a successful deal with India could help unlock nearly $300 billion in additional non-US export opportunities for Canada.

Goyal, meanwhile, said the relationship between India and Canada was undergoing a rapid transformation. He described the current phase as a “reset” that would reshape the partnership with new priorities and a mission-driven approach.

“It has set in motion the pathway to a complete overhaul of this relationship, setting new agendas, new goals in mission mode,” he said.

The minister further stated that both Prime Ministers had directed negotiators to work towards completing the free trade agreement with a comprehensive outlook before the end of this year or even earlier, if possible. He also noted that both countries aim to significantly scale up bilateral trade by 2030.

“We feel empowered to be able to make rapid progress to deliver results not only to businesses, but to the people of both countries,” Goyal added.

During his visit to Canada, Goyal held meetings with several senior ministers, including Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald and Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in sectors such as food security, agri-technology, sustainability, clean energy, innovation and investment flows.

Foreign Minister Anita Anand said both sides discussed expanding trade ties to generate new opportunities for businesses, workers and investors in both countries. She emphasised that a stronger partnership with India would contribute to Canada’s broader economic growth strategy.

Sidhu also noted that India is among the world’s fastest-growing major economies and said strengthening engagement with New Delhi is a key priority for Canada’s economic future.

With negotiations gaining momentum and political backing from both capitals, officials on both sides signalled cautious optimism that a comprehensive agreement could mark a turning point in India-Canada relations after years of diplomatic and economic uncertainty.
