TVK Allots Rajya Sabha Seat to Congress Ahead of Tamil Nadu Polls
Chennai, June 2026 : Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced that the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu, for which elections are scheduled on September 18, has been allotted to alliance partner Congress, reinforcing cooperation within the TVK-led coalition.
In a statement issued from the party headquarters, Vijay confirmed that the seat would be contested by the Indian National Congress as part of the alliance arrangement. The move is being seen as a significant political decision aimed at consolidating opposition unity and strengthening ties among alliance partners ahead of future electoral contests.
The announcement came shortly after a meeting between senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Vijay in Chennai on Tuesday. The interaction had sparked intense political speculation, with observers anticipating discussions on alliance coordination and representation in the Rajya Sabha.
Although neither leader publicly disclosed details of their discussions, political circles widely viewed the meeting as crucial in shaping the alliance’s strategy for the upcoming Upper House election. Sources indicated that both leaders explored ways to maintain cohesion within the coalition and arrive at a consensus on the Rajya Sabha candidature.
The decision to allocate the seat to Congress is being interpreted as a direct outcome of those consultations and reflects the growing understanding between the two parties. Congress leaders welcomed the announcement, describing it as a gesture of trust and a sign of strong cooperation within the alliance framework.
The upcoming Rajya Sabha election holds importance for both parties, with the TVK-led alliance enjoying a comfortable position in the state Assembly. Apart from the numerical strength of TVK legislators, the alliance also benefits from the support of five independent and allied MLAs who have backed Vijay’s leadership, further strengthening the coalition’s prospects in the election.
Political analysts believe the decision will help project stability within the alliance and reinforce a united opposition front in Tamil Nadu. By conceding the seat to Congress, TVK has signalled its willingness to accommodate allies and maintain a collaborative approach in coalition politics.
The Congress is expected to announce its candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat in the coming days. Party leaders are likely to hold consultations before finalising the nominee, with several prominent names already being discussed within political circles.
With the election process set to gather momentum, attention will now focus on the Congress candidate and the broader implications of the move for the evolving political landscape in Tamil Nadu. The development is expected to further shape alliance dynamics as parties prepare for future electoral challenges in the state.
Team Maverick.
