Iran Announces Funeral Schedule for Late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Tehran, June 2026 : Iranian authorities have announced an extensive funeral schedule for late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies set to begin in early July and conclude with his burial at the revered Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.

According to Iranian media reports, farewell ceremonies for Khamenei will commence on July 4 at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla prayer hall in Tehran and continue through July 5. Funeral processions are then scheduled to take place in the Iranian capital as well as the holy city of Qom on July 6 and 7.

The final rites will be held on July 9 in the northeastern city of Mashhad, where Khamenei will be laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Shia Muslims and one of the holiest sites in Iran.

The schedule was released by the headquarters responsible for organizing commemorative events for the late leader.

Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, was reportedly killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, an event that dramatically altered the political landscape of the Middle East. His death marked the end of a 36-year tenure during which he remained the highest authority in the Islamic Republic.

Following his death, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader in early March, according to media reports.

The killing of the 86-year-old cleric triggered heightened tensions across the region, with Iran’s response contributing to broader instability in the Middle East. The incident was widely seen as a major turning point in the history of the Islamic Republic, which has been governed under a Shia theocratic system since 1979.

At the time, US President Donald Trump announced Khamenei’s death, stating on social media that advanced intelligence and tracking systems had enabled the operation conducted in coordination with Israel.

Iran’s Fars News Agency also reported that four members of Khamenei’s family, including his daughter, grandchild and son-in-law, were killed in the strikes.

The funeral ceremonies are expected to draw large crowds from across Iran and the wider Shia Muslim world as the country prepares to bid farewell to one of its most influential leaders.
