Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Case Adjourned Again as Couple Skip Court Appearance

Chennai, June 2026 : The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha witnessed yet another adjournment on Monday after neither of them appeared before the Chengalpattu Family Court.

When the case came up for hearing, both parties were represented by their respective legal counsel, while Vijay and Sangeetha remained absent from the proceedings. Taking note of their non-appearance, the court adjourned the matter and scheduled the next hearing for August 7.

The high-profile matrimonial dispute has attracted significant public attention over the past several months, with repeated postponements delaying the progress of the case.

This is not the first time the couple has skipped court proceedings. During earlier hearings as well, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared in person, with their advocates representing them before the court.

According to sources familiar with the matter, requests have previously been made seeking permission for the couple to participate in court proceedings through video conferencing. The plea reportedly cited security concerns, logistical challenges and the intense public scrutiny surrounding the case, particularly in view of Vijay’s role as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The family court had earlier deferred the matter to June 15 after considering submissions made by both sides. However, with neither party appearing on Monday, the proceedings could not move forward, resulting in another adjournment.

Sangeetha had filed the divorce petition before the Chengalpattu Family Court in December 2025, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. In addition to seeking divorce, she reportedly sought alimony and requested permission to continue residing at the couple’s residence in Neelankarai, Chennai.

The case has remained under close public and media scrutiny due to Vijay’s transition from a leading film star to a political leader and later to the office of Chief Minister. Every development in the proceedings has generated widespread interest among political observers, supporters and the public.

The repeated adjournments have also fueled speculation regarding the future course of the proceedings, including whether the court may eventually permit virtual appearances for the parties involved.

With the latest postponement, the matter will now return before the court nearly two months later. The hearing on August 7 is expected to determine the next stage of the proceedings in what has become one of the most closely watched personal cases involving a sitting political leader in the state.

Until then, the legal process remains ongoing, with both sides continuing to be represented through their counsels.
